What does Bruce Allen mean to the Redskins and the Draft?

Mark ButerbaughDec 28, 2009

The Washington Redskins had some pretty stunning news the last ten days.  Vinny Cerrato’s sudden resignation brought glee and happiness to Washington fans all over.  The subsequent hiring of Bruce Allen as the first GM in the 10 year Dan Snyder reign brought further happiness to Redskins nation.   Something is happening in Washington and for the first time, there are some of us out there, that actually believe, maybe, just maybe, Snyder is turning over all football operations to professionals.

Regardless, after the Allen hiring, we asked a few our our Draft expert friends to assess what they though the Allen impact had on the Redskins 2010 Draft.  We followed that up and asked who they think the Redskins SHOULD take in the draft.  here are your responses.

At the end of the day Daniel Snyder is going to get his way.  Right now Snyder might say or even feel that he’s willing to turn power over to Bruce Allen and let him make the decisions but when push comes to shove Snyder will overule him if he doesn’t agree.  Ultimately I don’t see the Allen hire changing the Redskins Draft Day dynamic much if at all.

I have been saying for a while that Jason Campbell isn’t nearly as bad as some make him out to be.  I think with a little systematic stability Campbell could develop into a very good starting quarterback and I would have a hard time giving up on him now.  With that being the case I would try to shore up the offensive line in round one.  Russell Okung from Oklahoma State isn’t a franchise left tackle like Tony Boselli, Jon Ogden or Orlando Pace but he’s a very good all-around player with top intangibles who is capable of playing either the left or right side in the pros.  Hopefully Chris Samuels can come back and Okung can start out at right tackle while being groomed as his replacement on the left side.  If Samuels is done then Okung is the new left tackle.  Either way Okung is a guy you can plug in from day one and he would make both the passing and running games better.  With that said I think the Redskins WILL draft Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen.  Snyder has wanted a new hotshot quarterback for more than a year and Clausen is the type of high-profile, splashy player that he loves to bring into the franchise.
