Auburn Football: Gene Chizik Era's Dead Period Recruiting Update

Kevin McGradyDec 28, 2009

It looks like Auburn is set to finish the recruiting season in fine fashion. The Auburn Tigers are favored to pick up two more five star recruits before signing day.

It seems the new and exciting offense of Gus Malzhan has been a great selling point to perspective recruits. The chance to participate in some of the 1000 or more plays on offense per season is enticing to young players that want to show their abilities.

It looks as if Marcus Lattimore has realized there is a benefit of being in the backfield with Michael Dyer. Auburn will run more than 510 running plays next season.

It will take at least three great running backs at full potential to fill this need. Heisman winner Mark Ingram only carried the ball 249 times this season.

The added depth at Offensive Line and receiver has got the attention of Cameron Newton. He is expected to fill the last early sign slot. He is an extremely talented quarterback with physical gifts that will help Auburn.

For a complete list of recruits as well as the best description of each I suggest Auburn Fans go here: http://www.wareagleauburn.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=333:on-the-recruiting-trail-with-the-mayor-and-ausporttalk-volume-iii&catid=37:auburn-recruiting

This is a free site that gives the best recruiting information in one spot for the Auburn Tigers. It is put together by a knowledgeable team that has impressed me with their accuracy. Best of all it is free for all fans. I must say that their efforts are appreciated by myself as well as all Auburn fans.

On this Web page, you can find the usual list of committed recruits with a description of each. There is also a run down of each Auburn Football position and what recruits are expected to impact these positions. There is also a list of the recruits Auburn is still pursuing, along with a prediction of the chances of getting them.

I expect Cameron Newton to announce and sign with Auburn this week. Every available indicator points to this happening on Thursday. He decided with his family to take some time and think over his decision.

Update Dec. 29: Mr. Cameron Newton seems to have delayed his decision. If this is so, it is even a more positive indicator that the Auburn Tigers will be this young man's new home. The other major player, Mississippi State, has been recruiting him for months and is a known entity. Auburn only recently stepped into the picture. This does not seem to be good news for Mississippi State.

Update Dec. 30: Mr. Cameron Newton will give all parties involved notice before announcing his decision. His father has been very helpful and instrumental in helping him keep this decision in perspective. Most at Mississippi State consider this bad news, and most media sources seem to think this is good news for Auburn. Late Update: Mr. Cameron Newton is to be an Auburn Tiger.

He wants to make sure his decision is the best one for him and his future. The more he thinks out the situation he will be going into, the better Auburn will be for him.
