All Time Fights ,Rembering BJ Penn Vs Jens Pulver Fight 1!!!!!!
Heading into this fight BJ Penn had already taken the UFC by storm, plowing through fighters like a hurricane and turning the heads of fans and writers alike.
While Jens Pulver was the champion after defeating Dennis Hallman , nobody really thought that (lil evil) Pulver could hang with the prodigy, especially for five rounds , but on this night, even the great Penn would have to agree that he fought the toughest fight he has ever fought at 155 pounds.
For the first two rounds it was evident that Penn was a force, taking Pulver down at will and it looked like a coronation was in full bloom after Penn got an arm lock so deep and tight that it looked like he was going to snap off Pulvers arm. But Pulver endured the pain and the lock until the buzzer saved him.
And then it all went south for Penn from there, I still believe that the last three rounds were won with sheer heart but a little evil probably didn't hurt also.
In rounds three and four Pulver gave back what Penn gave to him in the first two. Working the hands and keeping Penn at bay Pulver started to take BJ down and with a little pounding Penn was visably getting frustrated and losing his poise.
In the fifth all hell broke loose as the two stood toe to toe and exchanged punches for almost the entire round with pulver getting the better of Penn with two knockdowns . That all but sealed the deal and the belt for Pulver, who had just fought the fight of his life.
Then the emotion flowed, Pulver yelled into the microphone," on the ground again , i've been beatin my whole life ,this ain't nothing".
That was the best Pulver ever to step into a cage, and after a season of coachig TUF the two met up again, this time there would be no magic as Penn who had fully evolved by now handled Pulver with ease and finished him in two rounds with clearly better cage presence.
And while their careers have went in polar opposite directions with Penn now a top five pound for pound fighter and Pulver losing five of his last seven fights, we will always have that super fight between the two of them to remember that for one night it was all right to be a little bit evil.
