Open Mic: Top Young American Athletes Playing Soccer?

Larry KelleyJun 21, 2008

Who are you talking about?

Shall we assume a top young American athlete might opt for soccer, say like an Eli Manning or a younger Paul Pierce?

Something about this thought makes me think the answer to this question is both complicated and hypothetical at the same time.

It’s like asking an apple tree to grow lemons, or a peach tree to grow pears.

Do you ask a peach before you eat it if it came off an apple tree?

Let’s face it.

We Yanks are born knowing about and playing football, basketball, and baseball.  Just as do the soccer or rugby gurus in Britain, or the South Americans, or elsewhere in Europe.

Will this cultural dynamic ever change?

When the sun rises in the west, because you’re swimming upstream against an inviolate underlying principle, which we must remember.

Athletes, who grow up in a country known for a particular sport, or sports, seem to innately gravitate to that particular sport.

Sort of a cultural DNA thing.

And, from my perspective, therein lies their proprietary right to a position of worldwide excellence, which is as hard to penetrate as Beckham trying to crack an NBA starting lineup, or asking Dwyane Wade to command a ‘pitch’ the way he does a basketball court.
