Troy Glaus Signs with Atlanta Braves

Vernon CroyDec 23, 2009

As MLB trades start to heat up, the Atlanta Braves signed veteran third baseman Troy Glaus on Wednesday, Dec. 23 to a one year deal.

Glaus will likely play first base for the Braves in place of Adam LaRoche. Glaus has only played first base eight times during his career, but he will be a good fit for the Braves. He has been trying to get himself ready at the new position this winter, and he will be good to go come spring training if he passes the team physical.

The Atlanta Braves seem to go through a lot of players at the first base position, as Troy Glaus will be the 11th different opening day first baseman in the last 12 years for the Braves.

Glaus made $24 million over the last two seasons but will take a significant pay-cut with the Braves, who signed him to a one-year contract worth about $2 million. Glaus barely played in 2009 because of a shoulder injury for which he had surgery in January.

That injury is expected to be fully healed and Glaus has been working hard at a strength training facility in New Jersey. Throughout his career, Glaus has been one of the best power hitters in MLB—when he is healthy—so Braves fans can expect more pop in the lineup this season.

The big 6′6", 250-pound veteran has hit 304 home runs over just 12 seasons including two seasons with more than 40 homers.
