Best Baylor Men's Hoops Moment of the Decade?: Five-OT Victory at Texas A&M

Denton RamseyDec 23, 2009

When looking back at the last decade of Baylor men’s basketball, one moment absolutely comes to mind: the Bears five-overtime victory over the Aggies at Texas A&M.

The Bears have had their ups and downs since this decade began, but that all started to change when Baylor hired Scott Drew as their head coach.

Since that time, the Bears have been on the rise; and it’s only a matter of time before Drew’s Baylor hoops team become regulars in the NCAA Tournament every March.

With that in mind, and looking back at some great moments since Drew has taken over, my favorite and most fond memory has to be the Bears five-OT win in College Station in 2008.

That night, Baylor’s Curtis Jerrells led the way for the Bears with 36 points (along with eight assists, four rebounds, two steals and a block) in 53 minutes in a thriller at Texas A&M’s Reed Arena.

Longest game in Big 12 history.

Overtime after overtime, this game seemed like it would never end.

Literally.

But finally, after five grueling extra periods of play, Baylor walked away with a stunning 116-110 victory.

Soon thereafter, the Bears quickly (as quick as they could muster) jumped on a bus back to Waco after an extremely hard-fought win.

Jerrells carried the Bears on his shoulders in the fifth overtime, scoring 11 points in that final and decisive period en route to the Baylor victory over the Aggies.

“I don’t even know how many overtimes it was,” Jerrells told ESPN following the Bears win. “That just shows the ability, the dedication, and the will of this team. If we put our minds to it, no matter what happens, we’re going to get it done.”

That night, Baylor certainly did just that; and with their wild win in College Station, the Bears pushed their win streak to five (after being ranked for the first time since 1969).

Five overtimes at Reed Arena, Bears take wild win over Aggies; what a great game!
