NFL Playoff Scenarios: This 7-7 Team Will Make The Playoffs

James BrownDec 21, 2009

Currently the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos are the leading contenders for the AFC Wildcard. Both of these teams have very tough schedules down the stretch and both play on the road so it is very possible that a team with a 7-7 record will make the playoffs. Here is a breakdown of the teams with a 7-7 record and how they will finish down the stretch. If there is a collapse of Denver and/or Baltimore here is who I think will get the last spot.

 Miami Dolphins

--The good news for Dolphin fans is that the two games left on the schedule are at home and they are playing two teams that are 7-7 so essentially could eliminate two teams attempting to steal a spot from them.

 New York Jets

--It’s over for the Jets. Rex Ryan had his usual meltdown and the loss to the Falcons all but assured they are done. The two remaining games are against two of the best football teams in the AFC as they head to Indianapolis and host the Bengals in the season ender. They will not beat Peyton Manning as he attempts to go undefeated on the season.

 Pittsburgh Steelers

--The Steelers may be the most poised to grab the wildcard. They are the defending champions and off one of the best wins of the season. They get a revenge game against Baltimore and then fly to Miami for the end of the season. They will need some help since they don’t have a good record against the AFC. (4-6)

--The Titans have had a good run to get this close to the playoffs so my hats off to this team. They are at home against the Chargers and then head to Seattle. The Titans can win these games but can’t get caught in a letdown if they beat the Chargers and fly to Seattle.

   Houston Texans

--Houston has a tough stretch as they travel to Miami and then host New England to end the season. If they beat Miami I would not be surprised if they take down the Patriots since they have looked horrible on the road.

 Jacksonville Jaguars

--Jacksonville can pack it in for the season. They have lost three of four games and now head to New England and will try to beat the Patriots. The Patriots can clinch the AFC east with a win and that will mean the Jags will be out of the playoffs.

The Wildcard goes to: Tennessee Titans

They have two very winnable games left on the schedule. They are home Christmas night against the Chargers and then take on a Seattle team that has given up on the year. Jacksonville and the Jets are done, and the Texans, Dolphins, and Steelers will eliminate each other. They have the head-to-head tiebreaker against Miami and Houston. This will be a great story when the Titans make the playoffs after such a horrible start.
