Sundays From the Cellar: Sweet Relief

JoeSportsFanDec 21, 2009

Record: 1-13

Sunday’s Inevitable Outcome: Houston 16, Rams 13

Week 15 Revelation: After the Rams’ second punt of the first quarter, I realized that I had reached a point where I’m following the exploits of the St. Louis freaking Rams via Yahoo! Sports’ GameCenter.  At some point you have to stop and take control of your life and say, “dude, you’re 31 years old and you’re watching a little virtual documentation of a game featuring a 1-12 team that is poised to set the record for worst three-year stretch in NFL history. Get out and do something with your life.”

From that point, I didn’t really pay much attention to the rest of the game, but was 100% positive that when I checked the score later in the afternoon, they would be on the losing end.  Low and behold, I was correct.

By the numbers…
Rams record over the past three seasons – 6-40
Number of teams in NFL history who have had worse three-year stretches – 0
Number of times the Rams have led at the half in 2009 – 4
Number of times the Rams have led at the end of four quarters in 2009 – 1

The Moment of “This team is horrible”
Opening kickoff week 1.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

At least being far and away the worst team in the league may end up resulting in the the acquisition of the most dominant defensive player in college football…

That or -given the Rams’ propensity to completely mangle the draft - it may lead to even more frustration…

Competition for #32
#27 Oakland (W 20-19) – I’m trying to convince myself that its even worse to root for a team like the Raiders who are wildly inconsistent than it is for the Rams where at least you know what you’re getting.
#28 Cleveland (W 41-34) – The good: Their offense put up 41 on the Chiefs for their second straight win.  The bad: their defense actually gave up 34 points to the Chiefs.
#29 Tampa Bay (W 24-7) – Their whipping of Seattle almost assured that they would not be grabbing the #1 draft pick this year.  Enjoy that second win, suckers.
#30 Kansas City (L 41-34) – If the Lions can squeeze out one more win this year, the state of Missouri might just lock up the honor of hosting the two worst teams in the league.
#31 Detroit (L 31-24) – It still has to be infuriating that the actually lost to the Rams.
#32 St. Louis (L 16-13) – I’d love to tell you more about their game this week, but it was blacked out once again.
