MMA: Why Is Everyone In UFC Changing Weight Classes?

Dorothy WillisJun 19, 2008

Some days are better for me than others, but yesterday was a real "crazy maker!"

What am I griping about now, you may ask, just as I keep asking myself?

Well simply this: it seems like the whole UFC roster is planning to change weight classes!

Is it just spring fever, the summer blahs, or is everyone having as much luck with their diet as I am having with mine?

First B.J. Penn was chomping at the bit to go to Welterweight to try to destroy his old nemesis, Georges St. Pierre.  I just thought, "Good luck, buddy, everyone on the planet wants a piece of GSP!"

Then, there is Dana White telling Georges, "yes, you could go up or fight catch-weight with Anderson Silva soon."  Okay, that's a big surprise because everyone and his brother wants to see Anderson and Georges rumble.

Next, once Georges deals with Jon Fitch, there is the weighty issue of Thiago "I have been a good boy, but I can't make weight at 170" Alves who begged for a shot at...SURPRISE!...Georges.

Well, yesterday to make my confusion even greater, Roger Huerta is talking (gulp) about "going to 170 and hoping to wear the belt of that division with the assistance of none other than... Georges St. Pierre!

Will he and Georges fight each other then?  NO!  Roger says Georges is such a nice, genuine, laid back fellow, that he would "never fight him." Besides, he said "Georges is going to go up to 185 soon."  (Will this nightmare never end?)

It has long been known that Georges has said he would NOT go up to 185 if it meant ruining his friends' chances in that weight division, and he would NEVER fight one of his training partners or close friends.

So what the heck?  It has been announced that Anderson Silva is going to 205, Michael Bisping and Mike Swick have recently changed weight classes, people are speculating that Uriah Faber will leave WEC to fight in the UFC at 155.

I am thinking, "Oh, great. Who have I missed?  Because as sure as God made little green apples, I know some fighters have fallen through the cracks of my faulty memory here, and I hate to leave any pieces of the puzzle on the floor!"

Can anyone help with this conundrum?  Who is left?  What is the final score in this fiasco?  Is there anyone left to fight after all these changes?

"George, it's Dee.  Are you still there?"
