Battle Between Two Generations

Mahesh RJun 19, 2008

I have seen many old timers complain that modern cricket doesn't have many legends. They cite many reasons for this: emergence of one-day cricket, flat pitches etc. They cite the example of West Indies cricket. Once full of legends like the Three Ws, Sobers and the like, they are facing a serious dearth of talent. It is in this context that I attempt to make four world XIs. Two each from this generation and the last generation. This generation means players who played international cricket mainly in the 1990s and / or 2000s though they may have started in late 1980s. Similarly, players in the last generation might have started in the 1960s but their main playing days were in the 1970s and 1990s. Some players in the Elders' teams played in the 1990s but they played predominantly in the 1980s and 1990s.

Please have a look at the teams and say if the critics are right in saying modern cricketers are way behind their previous generation. Note all the XIs are for tests not ODIs.

Which team is the best and which generation is better? Have I made any wrongful omission or selection? In one of the teams, Dujon is the wicket-keeper. I don't know if he deserves to be in a World XI. I included him because I don't know much about other keepers of the time.
