Why the Sports Personality of the Year Award Has Been Hijacked

When I heard it, I couldn't believe it. I felt sick to be honest. The idea that a man who has done a great deal more in the past and not come close to the award can win the award this year was ridiculous.

Consider the achievements of boxer David Haye and Formula One driver Jenson Button.

Haye beat a man seven stones heavier than him in a boxing masterclass that many doubted could be achieved. Button finally had the car underneath him to show the world just how good a driver he really is. Both conquered the world.

Giggs has warranted a Sports Personality award in previous years—personally, I think he should be given the lifetime achievement award.

But over the last year? He has found a new lease on life, I'll certainly grant you that. I wouldn't even oppose the idea that a new award be created especially for people like him—people who have achieved great things over the years but have never won the award themselves.

His achievements over the last 12 months are minimal compared not only with other athletes, but also with his own record over the years.

Only two seasons ago, he won the Premier League and Champions League with Manchester United. Why was he not considered then? Because the headlines were about Christiano Ronaldo.

Now that Ronaldo has gone, suddenly people have noticed how big a part Giggs played in their recent successes, and apparently winning the Premier League and Carling Cup is enough.

The nomination was a token gesture of this by the BBC, and the vast public who support United and don't pay any real attention to football believe that his efforts on behalf of their club team are worth more than Jenson Button or David Haye on behalf of the whole nation.

A sentence regarding the words "head", "backside", and "stuck" comes to mind.
