Washington’s Brian Orakpo is making a late push for Defensive Rookie of the Year, and those four sacks against Oakland are the latest evidence. He has 11 for the season and should push Houston’s Brian Cushing and Buffalo’s Jairus Byrd for an award that could be as competitive as the league MVP.

The only issue I have here with Clark Judge is the bolded portion. A late push? Has Clark Judge paid attention all season? Brian Orakpo has been the best defensive rookie on the field since Week One. Not only has he produced, but each week, Orakpo seems to get even better. He is strong, very quick, and hard to contain. Orakpo is and has been having a banner year. He has broken the Washington Redskins rookie sack record, formerly held by Dean, Hamel and Andre Collins (7 sacks) and has looked as if he has been in the NFL for a few seasons. Another component that needs to be considered — Orakpo has 11 sacks and has not even been full time Defensive End. Got that Clark? Orakpo is now only 4 sacks behind the NFL lead. Good rookie year? No. Dominating rookie year!

All season, Houston’s Brian Cushing held a big lead for defensive rookie of the year honors, but Brian Orakpo’s four-sack performance in Washington’s 34-13 victory over Oakland could give him a chance to take the award. He now has 11 sacks for the season, and usually, double-digit sackers tend to win the defensive rookie honors.
