Mayweather Vs Pacquiao : The Perfect Clash Of Styles

Finally the date has been set. On March 13, 2010 Floyd Mayweather Jr will go one on one against Manny Pacquiao for the right to be called the undisputed pound for pound No. 1 boxer in the world and maybe just maybe the right to be called the greatest of all time.

Not only will this fight decide who the world's pound for pound boxing king is, Mayweather vs Pacquiao will also go close to deciding one the oldest tactical rivalries in the history of sport, defence vs attack.

Now i'm sure we all can agree that the likes of Barcelona are better to watch then Chelsea and that Pacquiao's two round destruction of Ricky Hatton was in hindsight more entertaining than Mayweather jr's tenth round stoppage of the same previously unbeaten fighter, but as the old saying goes boxing is about brains over brawn or in this case brains vs brawn.

In the blue corner we have the unbeaten five weight world champion Floyd 'money' Mayweather , loved by few hated by many , not the least i suspect for his defensive fighting style as much as his extremely cocky attitude.

Lets go back to Mayweather's most recent fight against Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez. Mayweather bobbed , weaved , slipped, and slided his way to a unanimous decision in one of the most statistically lop sided fights between two world class opponents ever seen. Make no mistakes about it , in Mayweather's display we witnessed boxing as an art form. Despite what the critics say, I for one was enchanted by the speed and skill of Mayweather as he dodged the mexican's punches, displaying tremendous agility and reflexes that reminded me of something out of the matrix.

It takes an extraordinary fighter to base his career around such a defensive style, while becoming so incredibly good at what he does that he manages to entertain the boxing world at the same time. He talks the talk and so far he has walked the walk. Soon the chance will come for self styled greatest of all time to finally silence all his detractors as he takes on the Filipino Manny Pacquiao.

In the red corner we have the seven weight world champion, actor, politician and part time musician Manny 'pac man' Pacquiao.

Once again we journey back in time , but this time to Pacquiao's most recent fight against  Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto. Boxing fans lapped it up as Pacquiao unleashed his devastating power on the bigger and supposedly more powerful Cotto, leading to a twelfth round stoppage in favour of the Filipino. Like Mayweather, speed is the main weapon in the Pacquiao's artillery, but that's where the similarities end. Unlike Mayweather, the Filipino's career has been based around  speed coupled with devastating power that usually ends with his opponents being pounded into submission.

While the pound for pound title might be up for grabs, Pacquiao is undoubtedly the most exciting boxer in the world today.

The stage is set for a fight of gigantic proportions as the two greatest boxers of this generation go head to head in a fight that has all the ingredients to become an instant classic. Mayweather vs Pacquiao, attack vs defence, the perfect clash of styles.

The question is which philosophy will come out on top ?

Only god himself knows. But in this writer's humble opinion, just like the old saying goes, boxing is brains over brawn.
