Miguel Cotto's Home Life Could be More Painful Than a Rematch With Manny

Colin LinneweberDec 9, 2009

Former WBO welterweight champion Miguel “Junito” Cotto had a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against him in federal court this week by a female employee that he terminated in October 2008.

Cotto (34-2, 27 Kos) had employed Martha Chacon Acevedo as an administrator of a residential property that he owned in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

According to the Venezuelan plaintiff, shortly after the 29-year-old Cotto hired her, he offered “money and other benefits in exchange for sustaining a sexual relationship with him.”

The lawsuit revealed that the “other benefits” were women’s lingerie, body creams, lotions, champagne, and DVDs of Sex and the City and Nip/Tuck.

Oddly, the apparently prude Acevedo claimed that she considers Sex and the City and Nip/Tuck to be “pornographic material.”

Acevedo admitted that she “acquiesced” to Cotto’s charms and fornicated with Puerto Rico’s most famed fighter for more than two months.

Over the course of time, Acevedo “could not cope morally or spiritually with the situation and expressed her objections.”

Once she snubbed Cotto, she was allegedly axed from her position by the scrappy pugilist.

Cotto lost his WBO crown to Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) by 12th round TKO last month at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao, 30, brutalized Cotto from the outset of the fight and Junito’s face eventually became such a bloodied mess that his wife vacated the arena with their two children in the 10th round because she could no longer stand to watch her husband tortured in the ring by the diminutive “Fighting Pride of the Philippines.”

Cotto’s family released a statement dismissing the allegations as “frivolous, empty and a total fabrication.”

Allegations are by no means always based on facts.

Cotto is entirely innocent of any wrongdoing until proved otherwise.

Conversely, at present, Acevedo’s accusations should absolutely be taken seriously.

Ultimately, this case will be settled by the versions of events provided by both Cotto and Acevedo.

In the meantime, Cotto had better hope that his wife allows the evidence in the lawsuit to be fully presented before she develops an opinion either way.

There is a longstanding adage that “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.”

If Cotto’s wife is a reactionary, the beating that he suffered at the hands of Pacquiao could pale in comparison to the one that he is about to receive from her.
