BCS Got It Wrong, Here Are The Match-Ups They Should Have Made
So another frustrating year with the BCS. This cartel is keeping us from a more exciting postseason. They’re not setting up exciting match-ups that can draw in more viewers. They’ve matched up the top two non-automatic qualifiers so one will have to lose instead of the opportunity to have both go undefeated. I think the BCS did get 10 good teams this year but I just don’t like the match-ups. Here are the match-ups that should be in the BCS.
BCS TITLE GAME
Alabama vs. TCU – This would be the ultimate “David vs. Goliath”. A non-AQ team challenging a storied college football program for the title. A very physical Alabama team against the quickness of TCU. The buzz around this game would be tremendous.
ROSE BOWL
Oregon vs. Georgia Tech – Two teams with tremendous running games could tear the field up. I think you’d see at least 500 yards of rushing between these two squads. It’d be great to see their defenses try to contain the opposition’s offense.
SUGAR BOWL
Florida vs. Iowa – Tim Tebow is the type of player you could see in the Big 10 with his style of play. The Hawkeyes had a great year and bring a strong defense in there and with the return of their QB Ricky Stanzi. Both are second place teams from BCS conferences and would make for an entertaining game.
ORANGE BOWL
Ohio State vs. Cincinnati – The battle for Ohio a would be a big draw. The undefeated Bearcats could challenge the Big 10 Champions in a huge game not just for the state of Ohio but for the average fan. Plus this would give the Buckeyes a chance to win a BCS game which hasn’t happened for years now.
FIESTA BOWL
Texas vs. Boise State – Another epic battle of “David vs. Goliath”. The Broncos bring in another undefeated record to a bowl game as do the Longhorns. Colt McCoy vs. Kellen Moore in a match-up of two of the year’s most productive quarterbacks. Texas can try to avenge a loss for the Big 12 conference when Oklahoma dropped the Fiesta Bowl to Boise State a few years ago.
The BCS could take some notes from the NCAA Tournament. Make match-ups people will want to see, not strictly based on tie-ins. Having a rematch of a bowl game from last year like TCU and Boise St. is disappointing. Both of these teams are glad to be in the Fiesta Bowl I’m sure but would rather face a different opponent and prove they belong in the BCS. When several BCS schools won’t play these teams in the regular season and then the BCS won’t give them the game to prove their worthy of inclusion. The Bowl Championship Series needs to start being more inclusive of these teams that are worthy. Boise St. beat the Pac-10 champion decisively this season. TCU won at Clemson, an ACC division champ and shared a common opponent, Wyoming, with Texas which they beat by a greater margin than the Longhorns. The BCS should give these team a chance to cap the season with a game that shows they do belong in the BCS.
