Consider Varlamov for Calder

Mark ButerbaughDec 8, 2009

There has been a ton of chatter of John Tavares, the 2009 NHL draft 1st overall pick, for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL’s top rookie.  Matt Duchene’s name pops up.  So does Niklas Bergfers, Evander Kane, and Michael Del Zotto.   They are big names.  But one that is not mentioned often, we think deserves significant consideration.

Semyon Varlamov

What about consideration for Washington Capitals rookie net minder Semyon Varlamov?   Varlamov has had a remarkable year thus far.  Varlamov is the best goalie on the Washington Capitals, period.  In fact, he is one of the best goalies in the NHL this season.

The list of strong NHL rookie-of-the-year candidates is long and seemingly growing. Philly’s James van Riemsdyk was the league’s rookie-of-the-month for November. John Tavares (Islanders) and Matt Duchene (Avalanche) have drawn headlines, while other rookie defenceman drawing good reviews include Victor Hedman (Lightning) and Matt Gilroy (Rangers).

Not even one consideration.  yet, many NHL teams will tell you right now, Varly is one of the hottest goal tenders in the NHL.

The Red Light District put out there early leaders for awards.  No mention of Varlamov.

Calder Trophy
1. John Tavares, NYI

You can pick out the legit Calder candidates by who stays near their same level all year. Tavares fits the bill thus far…
2. James van Riemsdyk, PHI
‘JVR’ has been great for the Flyers this year, and was a consistent force before the team’s recent struggles.
3. Tyler Myers, BUF
Myers just might win this award if the top two falter. The big D-man has performed up to expectations, and is a big reason why Buffalo is a contender.
4. Niclas Bergfors, NJ
The Swede has been really good for the Devils this year, but won’t get the credit he deserves.
5. Victor Hedman, TB
Hedman just scored his first goal last night, but that’s not his game. He’s logged solid minutes in his first 27 games.

No mention of Semyon Varlamov.
