Top 10 Moments of the World Cup This Decade (Videos)

Snide CommentsDec 8, 2009

With Henry's handball during qualifiers, Maradona's handball seems almost a lifetime ago. With next year's World Cup being the last of the decade, there wouldn't be any tournament without those moments.

We look at the top controversies, bad calls, special teams, shocking results that happened during the World Cup from the previous three tournaments. In no particular order, here we go:

The Quarterfinal of the World Cup 2002

Real Madrid CF v Girona FC - LaLiga EA Sports
Real Betis V Real Madrid - Laliga Ea Sports

Surely no fantasy manager, soccer expert or event FIFA conspiracy theorist predicted this bracket.

Germany vs. U.S.A

Spain vs. Korea

England vs. Brazil

Senegal vs. Turkey

Croatia Stun the World in France '98

Croatia reached the semifinals of their first World Cup by thrashing Germany in the quarterfinals, 3-0, before losing to France in the semis and beating Netherlands to claim a third place finish. Davor Suker scored in every match but one; it is more ironic that in the game he didn't score Argentina kept a clean sheet.

Senegal Stun France in 2002

We all know Barthez had his problems, but little can be said of his other teammates during this game, who failed to take chances that came their way, as France were beaten by first timers Senegal.

It wasn't all Senegal though, as France, the defending world champions, left the tournament without scoring a goal. Only China, Slovenia, and Saudi Arabia had lower points as well as goal difference. Ah, the celebration was iconic.

Ronaldinho Retires Seaman

What was he thinking? Anyway this was the goal that sent a hopeful England side crashing out of the World Cup. They didn't need penalties to push them out as it did in 1998 to Argentina and to Portugal in 2006, as Ronaldinho whipped this one in. It was not all parties as he was sent off later.

Byron Moreno

In case you are wondering who this guy is, he is the weirdo that officiated the game that knocked Italy out of that world cup, by whom? South Korea.

He sent off Totti for diving, awarded South Korea a dubious penalty, and Italy were eliminated by an extra time goal. However, he was given a 20-match ban after he played an extra 13 minutes of stoppage time during a match between Deportiva Universita de Quito and Barcelona Sporting Clubin the Ecuadorian League.

After returning from his suspension, Moreno was suspended again after controversially sending off three players in one match. He is retired now.

Graham Poll's Three Yellow Cards (2006)

Even my cousin who doesn't watch soccer knows that two yellow cards make a red card, but maybe referee Graham Poll forgot just for a whole game! In the game between Australia and Croatia in the 2006 World Cup, Josip Simunic should also be faulted as he didn't even play cautiously to avoid being sent off for a third yellow card.

More controversially, Sepp Blatter said a replay would have been ordered if Croatia had won. Does that ring a bell?

Four See Red in Nuremberg

On this infamous day, Portugal and Netherlands were playing. There were four red cards and 16 yellow cards while the referee missed a headbutt from Figo that would have taken the tally to five and 17. Regardless, the Netherlands lost the game courtesy of a Maniche strike in the 23rd minute.

Thierry Henry...before 2010

I know this isn't in the World Cup, but Henry's infamous handball will be talked about for years as he led France to the World Cup via a Terrence Williams-type palming of the ball. More controversially, Sepp Blatter denied a request for a replay by everyone including Henry and also declined to have a 33rd team in the World Cup.

Ronaldo Is Included in the Final Squad...Twice

The Brazilian maestro sparked a very big debate as he suffered a fit the night before the final match against France in 1998. He was taken off the list, only to appear before kick-off. We all know the rest as Zidane would have none of it, leading France to their first World Cup glory.

Zinedine Zidane’s Headbutt in the Final of 2006

We will never know why he did it, but this act of whatevayouwantocallit cost France the world cup as they lost to penalties to Italy. We don't know what Materazzi said to prompt the action but reports say he insulted his sister.
