Joey Crawford ref's the final game of the NBA finals? Stern never learns!

Elon GerbergJun 18, 2008

Why oh why was Joey Crawford part of the officiating crew in the last game of the NBA finals?  It may not have been much of a factor this game, but if you do recall, he called two technicals in Boston...

The question is simple....WHY THE HECK WAS HE OFFICIATING?!!  The biggest scandal the NBA has ever seen all surrounds the officials.  After all, more and more is coming out about this whole Tim Donaghy referee scandal, and this is the NBA's biggest stage... So why set yourself up for failure, David Stern? WHY!?

It was only last year that this man, Joey Crawford, was suspended from refereeing for a full year because he threw Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs out of the game.  Don't recall? Well if you haven't heard or seen it, check it out on youtube.  Joey Crawford throws Tim Duncan out of a game while he was sitting on the BENCH!!!

But David Stern doesn't learn much from his mistakes, does he?  After the big scandal, and the NBA agreeing that Joey Crawford was out of line for throwing Tim out of that game, he was suspended... but David Stern did not learn his lesson.

Joey got the chance to referee yet another big Spurs playoff game, and yet again he was able to make a huge call against the Spurs that ultimately cost them their playoff lives.  You remember.... in the closing seconds, Brent Barry, why was on fire all night, pump fakes a last second three-pointer and was then clobbered by a helpless Derek Fisher.  Joey Crawford was right there, but he didn't blow his whistle.... coincidence?  or did he have the last laugh and get his retaliation against the Spurs?

The real question is, in this day of referee scandals in the NBA, why does Stern even take this chance?  Why was that controversial referee officiating a game that included the team that sent him home packing without pay last year?!

It didn't stop there though.  Once again, the nation was wondering why on Earth this referee didn't call that call, and further more people were once again looking at Stern, the commissioner of the NBA like he had down syndrome.  What are you thinking?

Now here is the real question that I find dumbfounding..  If I am David Stern, I would do anything in my power to make sure the integrity of the game is taken care of... but Stern isn't learning.

Controversial "mistake" after "mistake" is being made by Joey Crawford.  Last time he got suspended for a year.  This time, after making the wrong call, which ultimately allowed the Lakers to surpass the Spurs, Stern takes matters in his own hands... What was Joey's punishment this time?  He had to referee game six of the NBA finals!

At a time when people are more skeptical of NBA referees than ever.  David Stern decides that he should put his most controversial referee in the game to officiate on NBA's biggest stage.  I bet Joey is shaking out of his boots.  He'll shape up real fast... next year that is.
