Mental Strength Is All Roger Needs
Rakesh KumarDec 7, 2009
I read the article about Roger's game "why Roger is not as Dominant"...
Some facts are true..but at the point of conclusion I am not agree with the writer...
Because he thinks that other players has raised their games thats why Roger is declining...
He reached in almost every grand-slam final since last 6 years- even when he is failing(As most people think) like in year 2008 when he couldn't make to Australian Open Final..He was there on 3 other grand-slam finals(French, Wimbledon,US) and won at US Open..He reclaimed his no1 status with a complete swing of his racquet..reaching every final in 2009 grand-slams winning 2..including much awaited French Open and regaining Wimbledon crown...Just 1 of them is more than a lifetime for most of the players...
The fact is that he is not declining in career..it is more about mental toughness...
If the writer would have been right--then this fact is also right that if other players have raised their games and Roger is not able to cope with it- simply means Roger has not raised his game according to the level at which these players are playing??- which simply means that he is not playing good at all...
But the truth is this --"It is not that Roger is unbeatable- it is this that he is most successful"
The same is what I would like to say...
Winning or losing depends on many factors besides the skill of playing on the time of match-
Mental conditions at the time of playing, physical fitness, will-power and the surrounding-conditions(luck is one of them too) suiting you.
The totality of above is word SUCCESS...being at the right place at the right time...or making the opponent at the wrong place at the right time...
or vice versa...
Because when you are on the court- the above is what helps you- and not being world number 1 or 2 or 200..you chase the ball and hit it where the other player finds it difficult and be prepared to go through the same when the other player does so...
I dont think that the players have raised their game to a very high level..See the matches 2004-2007- the players were too fast and more solid around the court than today...it is just that we always measure it from the perspective of Roger's game..which is not fair..Players like Devydenko are also shining who I dont think played more than 1 match this year against Roger..but he showed some great hustle to all including Djokovick in Shanghai, Nadal and DelPotro in ATP world Tour Finals..
Yes, I agree that Roger was not getting all these combinations right at Basel, Paris Masters and ATP Tour Finals- But a lso remember he was the only guy standing tall in Semis from top 4 players in the world..
Every player has to make timely adjustments in the game...but most of them are made in mind..How far you can think in the short span of time..and how good you execute it..
Roger knows that very well...but it doesn't work for the same player all the time...
He will be back in 2010 and many more years to come...Not to pre-claim himself for the titles but to show the WORLD what this game is all about....
