Monday AM Pundits: Word on the Redskins, the day after

Mark ButerbaughDec 7, 2009

88972237LF016_BRONC_REDSKNHere is the Monday Morning Pundit report.  Each Monday we take a look at what the leading NFL analysts have to say about the Redskins, if anything.  Finally, we take a sweep around the Redskins blog nation to find out what our fellow Bloggers have to say.  Your Monday AM Pundit Report . . .

Clark Judge, Snap Judgments, CBS Sportsline

Judge had a lot to say.

"

Before they fire Jim Zorn, the Washington Redskins should can Shaun Suisham. He missed two field goals — including a 39-yarder — in the club’s one-point loss to Dallas, and he blew a 23-yarder that would have clinched a victory over New Orleans. No wonder Zorn said he feels “awful.” The Redskins played hard for him the past three weeks, and they have nothing but three more losses to show for it.

"

We of course agree.  We called on a signal to be sent yesterday, fire Suisham first thing Monday morning.  This is now 2 games in a row the Redskins lost partially due to the misses on field goals that an NFL kicker should make.  No one would be blaming Suisham if this was a 50 yarder.  They are tough even for the best kickers.  But, a 39 yard miss to Dallas was bad.  The 23 yard miss yesterday was ludicrous and unforgivable.   Suisham should be applying to Weis or Wal Mart for employment opportunities.  Besides, his kickoffs are unimpressive as well.

"

Look at it this way, Redskins fans: At least you’re getting something out of last year’s draft. With Washington’s decline and fall, the team is playing second-round choices Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly and Fred Davis, and finding that maybe, just maybe, there’s a future in them. Davis and Thomas combined for four touchdowns the past two weeks, while Thomas had his first 100-yard game vs. the Saints.

"

We may be witnessing the transformation of Devin Thomas into a legitimate receiving threat.  Thomas has something that Redskins fans are NOT used to in receivers — size and good hands.  Thomas is catching what is thrown his way and showing a great instinct for picking up additional yards after the catch.  I have been waiting for nearly a season and half for one of these two, Thomas or Kelly, to give the Redskins a 100 yard day.  Done.  Thomas has been a beast the last few weeks and even better news is, he is getting open.  You have to like the future at receiver a bit better this morning.

88972237LF012_BRONC_REDSKNDavis’ progress, regardless who the new coach is, should be a statement that the Redskins should look to install more 2 tight ends sets next year with Cooley and Davis.  Have a double tight end threat is an extremely valuable tool for the new sideline Boss.  Davis has shown signs that he has kicked the fumble bug, and his efforts after he catches the ball is a solid example of his maturity at the professional level.

Kelly, well, still not impressed. [Read more →]
