Jason Whitlock: A Product Of The Media Machine
Jason Whitlock; the self anointed god of of race related journalism. The man portrays himself as of pioneer. Although a very talented sports writer, he is just that, a sports writer. Its easy to get lost behind his facade of the "angry black man", writing about the supposedly taboo topics. Topics other journalists wont dare to cover. I ask the reader; is it that the others don't dare, or they don't care?
I'll go with they don't care. Before I explain why, allow me to digress and explain why I feel the need to give my take on the man, who gives his own take on every sports situation involving a black athlete.
I now ask you to consider the following. Like Mr. Whitlock;
1) I am a minority
2) I was born and raised in the Midwest during the post Civil Rights Era
3) I attended and graduated from a MAC school.
Now I ask you to consider this: presenting person number two;
1)I was a minority-that lived in say South Carolina during segregation
2) I attended a segregated school
3) I attended a college to play football, and I wasn't allowed to play the position I wanted because of my race.
Now let me throw in a twist; what if I criticized person number 2 on national television, held my self out to be a higher authority on race relations, and last but not least accuse them of promulgating an agenda that I thought had a deterrent affect on race relations in America? At best, you may be courteous, tell me its a free country, and I have the right to my opinion. At worst, I could end up with a black eye. In either scenario, I would suspect I would garner a negative response as result of my actions.
How about I throw in one more thing to push this over the edge. What if person 2 had a direct relationship with Dr. Martin Luther King, and was instrumental in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's? The very same movement that allowed me to grow up in a time where I didn't have to go to a segregated school, or be passed up for a position on my football team because of my race.
Answer: Black eye, make that two black eyes.
That black eye I speak of, is what you are doing to the rest of us Mr. Whitlock. Putting all your phony media awards aside, you are similar to me and many other minorities that grew up in the time we did, and where we did. Why it is that you have the audacity to think you are some pioneer is beyond me.
Here is my take on the REAL race related problem. You, Mr. Whitlock are nothing more than a revenue booster for a presumptively white owned media outfit. All you are to them is $$$$$, at the expense of the rest of us who are thankful for what we have, and those who paved the road before us. You as their cog go and spin up media controversy, and return to your fictitious throne. All the while having a subjective belief that you are transcending racial barriers. That's not the case, your building them back up by targeting issues that the "white" media wants you to.
If you decided you were done, the media would find another person that fits your mold. You hold yourself out to be THE Black Writer of the decade. Sadly, when most propel think of an African American Sport writer they think of you. Why? You write articles tailored by the white media, for suburban upper middle class readers. These same readers laugh at you as you humiliate people of your own race. When it comes to critiquing someone such as Rush Limbaugh, where is your edge. The same edge you had when you said Vince Young should be a wide receiver or the completely disrespectful and borderline disturbing things you said about Sean Taylor, before you had any facts? Where is it Jason? Is it hidden behind your job security, and your phony awards?
If your wondering who person number two I described above is, I apologize. I just cant bring myself to disrespect a great man, by referencing his name in the same article as Jason Whitlock. Someone might run a google search and the text of these two names would appear too close to each other for my liking. I don't want to be responsible for anyone drawing any correlation between these two men.
If you really want to know who that person is, e-mail me. I`d b glad to tell you.
Keep the faith. Be thankful. God Bless.
