The Football Season Started with a Sucker Punch, and Ends with One Too.

Bob SmithDec 6, 2009

Another year, another BCS blunder. We thought this may be the year when there wasn’t a BCS bowl game controversy, well we thought wrong.

Could this college football season really get any worse? First there were the officiating blunders of the SEC officials which may have prevented Alabama from receiving two losses earlier in the season against the likes of LSU and Tennessee (incase you missed either of those games, LSU intercepted an Alabama pass in the fourth quarter which was reviewed and called incomplete when the LSU cornerback clearly had possession, and the Tennessee game in which “Mount Kody” removed his helmet before a play was over in which would have given Tennessee an attempt at a 29 field goal to win the game). If this wasn't enough, Alabama wasn't the only SEC team to benefit from questionable SEC calls. Florida narrowly escaped Arkansas earlier in the season when a questionable late hit call allowed Florida to continue a drive which led to a game-tying touchdown. Then of course there was Dez Bryant, Oregon State University’s standout wide receiver being suspended for the remainder of the season for lying to NCAA investigators about events which hardly merited such a suspension. Not even Legarrette Blount received such a stiff penalty and he sucker punched another player, not to mention almost went after a fan in the stands. Well, I guess the college football season did start off with sucker punch, and the regular season may as well end with one too.

As I sat and watched the BCS games announced I became horrified when I realized what was about transpire. No, not Alabama versus Texas. That bowl match-up was predictable (even though I do not see Texas coming anywhere close to beating Alabama), but TCU vs Boise? Are you #*&^$#*$ kidding me!

Maybe the Fiesta Bowl will be as good as the previous Fiesta Bowl that featured Boise state, which would be very entertaining, but it may not be what college football fans want to see. TCU has dominated every team it’s played this year. They’ve outscored their opponents by 327 points in 12 games, averaging just over 27 points per game, and now as football fans we don’t get to find out whether that’s because TCU really is that good or because they’re not in a big boy’s conference. Boise State has also, again, showed they are in a class above the rest of their conference, but who knows where they rank among the college football elite. The BCS has taken the opportunity out of the hands of TCU and Boise State to prove they deserve to be where they are.

I’ve had enough. The BCS will not change as long as everyone keeps watching. Yes, as fans we whine about the BCS year after year, but we continue to watch the games and until that changes, the BCS will not. Sorry BCS, but this year you won’t be getting my ratings. Yeah, that’s probably only .00000000001% of the total viewers who tune into BCS bowl games, but hey at least I can say I tried. Who knows, maybe the one person who reads this will turn that into .00000000002%.
