The Great Escape: Saints Keep Undefeated Season Alive

Howard Nevens IvDec 6, 2009

When the New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins met at FedEx Field it looked like a mismatch on Paper the 11-0 Saints vs the 3-8 Redskins. This should have been an easy win on paper it was clear who the better team was but there is a reason we play all 16 games. When the game began Jason Campbell started off the game well. On the opening drive Campbell hooked up with TE Fred Davis from 8 yards out to give the Skins a early 7- 0 lead. After a 3 and out for the Saint Campbell march the Skins down to N.O 18 yard line where the drive stalled Shaun Suisham Tacked on 32 yd Field Goal to make it 10-0 after 1 Quarter of play. In the 2nd Quarter the Saint wouldn't be out done Bree's drove the Saints to the 16 yard line but that is where the drive stalled  they would have to settle for a Field Goal making it a 10-3 ball game with about 3 minute gone in the 2nd Quarter. A three and out for the Redskins gave the Saint back the ball and Brees #9 was able to find Marques Colston deep down the left side of the field for a 40 yd Touchdown tying the game at 10-10. Campbell would answer back with a 88 yard drive that was capped by a 5 yd TD catch by #11 Devin Thomas making it 17-10 Redskins . Toward the end of the 2nd Quarter one of the weirdest wildest plays i have ever seen happened. The Saints got the ball to around midfield less than a minute to play in the half Drew Brees #9 was intercepted by K.Moore who was stripped of the football by #17 Robert Meachem who ran it into the end zone for a 44 yd Touchdown the play was challenged and upheld. Going into the half the Saints were able to tie the game at 17-17.

When the 2nd half began the Redskin took back the lead on their opening drive with a Shau 28 yd Field Goal. A three and out led for the Saints led to another Washington TD and once again it was Devin Thomas for 13 yds out giving the Skins a 27-17 lead Midway Thur the 3rd Quarter. at end of the 3rd Quarter it was 27-20 Washington with the lead and the ball. The Redskins finished their drive a 21 Yd field goal by Shaun Suisham giving them a 2 possession lead at 30-20  12:51 to in the 4th Quarter. Shaun Suisham missed a chip shot field goal from 23 yds out  this may have cost The Washington Redskins the game as Drew Brees got the Saints into the no huddle offense and were able to tie the game at 30 with a 53 yard Td catch by #17 Robert Meachem with just under 2 minutes to play in the game. Campbell went to work from his own 25 yard line drove the Redskin to around mid field about 20 yards shy of field goal range for Shaun Suisham his career long is 52 YdS. Campbell was looking for TE #86 Fred Davis when the pass was intercepted by # 51 for New Orleans Jonthan Vilma who ran out of bounds at his own 46 yard line. Drew Brees wasnt able to move the ball much and Garret Hartley would attempt a 58 yard field goal that was no good and we would need more than 4 quarters to decide this one.

In overtime Washington one the toss and elected to receive and after a touch-back they started the drive from their own 20 yards line. On 2 and 4 Campbell completed a 3yd pass to FB #45 Mike Seller who was hammer by #29 for New Orleans Chris McAllister who recover the fumble giving Drew Brees and the Saints great field position. The drive started at the 37 yd line. Brees was able to move the ball down to the goal line before Garret Hartley kicked the 18 yd game winning field goal as the Saint were able to escape in the most improbable way.

I guess it goes to the old saying " Bad teams will find a way to lose and good team will find a way to win either way what a ball game Drew Brees another outstanding performance 35-49 419 Yd 2 TD as the Saints are able to stay undefeated and move to 12-0
