Florida Swept Away By The Tide, Texas Edges Nebraska In Week 14
Here’s how the Macho Rhino Top 25 fared in week 14 of the 2009 season:
1. Florida lost to 2. Alabama 32-13 – I picked Alabama to win but didn’t think they’d dominate quite like this. Alabama’s defense was a force that Florida simply didn’t have an answer for all day. The Tide controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides and that allowed them to pull away in the second half.
3. TCU – Regular Season is over.
4. Texas beat 11. Nebraska 13-12 – A shocking play by Colt McCoy at the end of the game nearly cost the Longhorns the game. I think that single play could cost McCoy the Heisman. McCoy took the snap with eight seconds remaining in the game and rolled out to toss the ball out of bounds with just one second remaining. Such a risky play that could have cost the Longhorns the Big 12 Title and chance at the National Title also. The Black Shirts are back for Nebraska though. The Cornhusker defense carried them throughout the game but a late penalty helped Texas gain yards for the game winning field goal. The Nebraska offense just couldn’t get it in the end zone and that kept them from a Big 12 title. Colt McCoy to Jordan Shipley was the key on the game winning drive but that’s no surprise.
5. Boise St. won at New Mexico St. 42-7 – The Broncos rolled but no surprise there. They now await an invitation to a BCS Bowl.
6. Cincinnati won at 19. Pittsburgh 45-44 – A great game. Pittsburgh jumped out to a big lead but Cincinnati rallied in the second half and stayed undefeated. With just over two minutes left, Pittsburgh running back Dion Lewis capped an impressive day with a touchdown that could have sealed a Big East Championship for the Panthers but a bungled snap on the extra point left the door open for Cincy. Tony Pike led his team down the field for a TD with 33 seconds left and added the extra point to win.
7. Oregon 37 beat 10. Oregon St. 33 – This was a great game. Oregon St. had the lead at the half but Oregon stopped turning it over in the second half. Oregon’s running game controlled the fourth quarter and sends them to the Rose Bowl. Look out Buckeyes!
8. Virginia Tech – Regular Season is over.
9. Ohio St. – Regular Season is over.
12. LSU – Regular Season is over.
13. Penn St. – Regular Season is over.
14. BYU – Regular Season is over.
15. California lost at Washington 42-10 – Cal is a hard team to read. They just got blown out at Washington today but has good wins on the resume from this season.
16. Stanford – Regular Season is over.
17. Georgia Tech beat. Clemson 39-34 – Georgia Tech is headed to the BCS as ACC Champs. They had to come from behind in the fourth quarter for a late TD that sealed the win. This was a great game for the ACC but don’t know how many people watched.
18. Iowa – Regular Season is over.
20. USC lost to Arizona – A huge win for Mike Stoops. This is the win his program needed. Going on the road and beating a power like USC. Granted this isn’t the typical USC team of the past few years but none the less it’s a huge momentum builder for the Wildcats. For Pete Carroll, this season has turned ugly but luckily it should be a growth year and he can see an improvement next year.
21. Utah – Regular Season is over.
22. Miami – Regular Season is over.
23. Houston lost at East Carolina 38-32 – Houston turned it over four times in this one and that proved to be too much for them to overcome. A great win for Skip Holtz and his Pirates to win Conference USA.
24. West Virginia won at Rutgers 24-21 – Rutgers started the year with hopes of a Big East Championship but has struggled and ends the year as a middle of the pack team in their conference. West Virginia has beaten Rutgers 15 straight now.
25. Oklahoma St. – Regular Season is over.
