Why Superman Cried Today

Kirk ClermontDec 5, 2009

First, let me state that Alabama played a great game.   Players executed.  Play calling was outstanding.  Discipline ruled and they played with a passion not seen since John Elway won his first Super Bowl.   Now, let’s get on to Florida.

Tim Tebow has not been the same since his concussion.   In this game, his throws were either too high or too low.  He lacked the Goldilocks touch of McElroy (that is to say, he didn’t have it just right).  This was clear with his game-losing interception in the fourth quarter.   It was not his play alone that lost the game.   His receivers dropped balls.   His line failed to protect him.   And most notably, the defense completely collapsed.

Florida should have played a bump and run man-to-man style of defense vice the nonsense zone coverage.   They should never have given folks 10 to 20 yard cushions off the line of scrimmage.  How did they let Jones, the Tides’ number one receiver, be unguarded so many times?    What happened to tackling?  The QUARTERBACK, YES, the quarterback, looked like Barry Sanders against Florida.    It is inexplicable.   It is illogical.   It is sad.   It so pains me to discuss this game because Florida just failed to show up.   They did not play physical.    They did not play with passion.   They looked like Hillary Clinton during the Presidential primaries.   Nothing is given, nothing is inevitable.   So they ended up just like she did- a loser.

I could go on about Ingram's monster game.  I could talk about Florida's secondary making McElroy look like Joe Montana or Florida's front four making him look like John Elway.   I could go on and on about mighty Florida's failings, but to what end?  What is the point?   There are no do overs in college football, you must bring your "A" game all the time.   Florida did not bring it.  They paid the price.

Hopefully Florida bounces back and does not embarrass the SEC against the Bearcats.  I suspect Urban Meyer and Charlie Strong have something to prove;  Tebow would like to go out as a winner as well.  As for the Crimson Tide, good luck to you.  Represent the SEC with respect and win the conference yet another national title.
