Why Tiger Woods Should Get a Divorce...by The New Year

Martin WilliamsDec 4, 2009

When I first heard that the world’s number one golfer and possibly the most recognized athletes on the planet, Tiger Woods, was involved in an auto accident, I feared the worst. I thought a generational talent, and transformative athlete was lost or at least severely diminished as a result. Well, not quite. It turns out Tiger got his hands caught in the cookie jar, and his wife took her cuts on him and his Cadillac (allegedly). Either way, with all these mistresses coming forward and barracuda attorneys out for blood, Tiger has to think long-term. I’m sure he loves his wife, but to carry on a nearly 3-year affair doesn’t say to me that that love is undying. I really think for the sake of his kids, his wife, his career, and his greatest goal in life, to win more majors than Jack Nicklaus, Tiger should get a divorce.

I know Tiger won’t ever read this, but the problem with staying with his wife is that she knows you’ve been putting into different greens all around the world. She has been humiliated. Do you really think all will be well when you come home? No. Women may forgive but they never forget and Elin Nordegren will be no different. There’s no way back from adultery. Elin will make life tough on El Tigre from now until. You have to cut your losses if you’re Tiger. Happiness at home is crucial to success; my relationship at home is amazing and allows me to be fresher and more creative. When there’s a bitter spouse waiting for you, it makes you less inclined to come home or certainly as often as you’d like. Here are 3 reasons divorce is the best option:

Money- Tiger will have to part with much money in a divorce, this is a given. Divorcing her now, minimizes the outflow. Tiger will catch Nicklaus (much sooner if he takes my advice) and win a lot of other tournaments along the way. That’s a lot of money. Plus, it looks as if his sponsors are sticking with him. Woods could become the first athlete to earn a billion dollars from his playing alone. Do the math: $150 million vs. $500 million

Freedom- It’s obvious Tiger loves to hunt the ladies. A divorce would allow him to do that now with no worries about getting caught or paparazzi stalking him. Some people aren’t built for marriage especially at a younger age.

Peace- As I alluded to before, Tiger gave up his peaceful home in various hotel rooms/suites around the world. His wife won’t let him live it down, not saying that she should. Sometimes, the damage is beyond repair. Coming home to a quiet house will only be good for Woods as he chases one of the most hallowed records in sports.

Some of you will say, ‘but what about Kobe?” The Kobester’s incident was vastly different than this. It seems to have been an isolated incident and considering that Bryant was younger at the time as well as by all accounts of him faithful up to that point, the marriage was salvageable. It just doesn’t look like Tiger’s is.
