Can Tyreke Evans Take ROY From Brandon Jennings?

Ro ShiellDec 3, 2009

Brandon Jennings maybe the first player to score 55 points in his rookie season and not win the honor of Rookie Of The Year (ROY).

In only his fifth game the Bucks' guard erupted for 55 points. That was then followed up by three twenty point games, leading the Bucks to one of their best starts in years.

However in his last 5 games Jennings has only made 30% of his field goals averaging 15 points a game.

Tyreke Evans on the other hand has gone from strength to strength each game. The Sacramento Kings rookie started the season averaging 11 points in his first five games. His 26 points in the win over Indiana Pacers last night made it his eleventh 20 point game so far.

For the season Jennings is currently averaging 21.5 points and 5.8 assists a game. Evans follows him closely averaging 19.3 points and 4.8 assists.

They were named the Eastern and Western Conference T-Mobile Rookies of the Month, respectively, for games played through the first month of the season.

The last time two rookies were so hot on each other's heels for the leagues new best comer title was the 2003-04 season. Carmelo Anthony gave Lebron James a run for his money but succumbed in the end. However this is still debatable between fans.

This is great company for both Jennings and Evans as James and Anthony are currently the elite of the NBA.

Indeed Lebron James may currently be one of the leading candidates for Most Valuable Player (MVP) and only one of two players to average over 18 points 5 rebounds and 4.5 assists. The other player is Tyreke Evans.

"I wouldn't say I'm the best, but I'm one of the best rookies in the league," Evans said. "There are a lot of guys going good, Brandon Jennings is doing great."

The Bucks and the Kings currently have a record of nine wins and eight losses. While the Bucks started at five and two, they have only won four of their last ten games.

Sacramento has won six of their last ten games and is currently third in their division. Last season they had only seventeen wins overall. Their best player Kevin Martin is out with a wrist injury.

Although the ROY may be Jennings’s to lose, we are only 17 games into an 82 game season. His coach Scot Skiles thinks that personal adjustments will have to be made by his young guard to overcome his current slump.

In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Skiles  went on to say the following.

"He's never been through anything like this. This many games in this period of time. Playing at this high a level with as many big bodies and athletes."
