Brewster's Home for Sale: Minnesota Gophers Coaching Change Imminent?

Kristopher FieckeDec 2, 2009

Putting your home on the market is usually a sign that you don't feel very good about your current situation, especially if you're a coach or a pouting, crybaby former Bronco quarterback.

That seems to be the case in Minnesota, as local NBC affiliate Kare 11 ran a report on December 1 that coach Tim Brewster's home on Lake Minnetonka has been put up for sale.  Is this a sign that Joel Maturi is ready to give Brewster his walking papers?

Speculation has been running rampant around the Twin Cities about the Gophers football coach.  Following another late season meltdown, the Gophers have failed to live up to expectations under Brewster yet again, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility that Brewster could be fired.

Small problem with the Kare 11 report though.  While rushing to break this hot news story, Kare 11 neglected to mention that Brewster's home had been listed for sale since September.

It seems that Brewster put his home on the market prior to the season.  Did he know that his team was going to sputter down the stretch?  Was Brewster able to see into the future and realize that his offense would fail to score a touchdown in the season's final two games?

Look, everybody makes mistakes.  I'm not going to blame Kare 11 for this.  They need ratings, speculation of a coaching change always draws in viewers, listeners or readers.  The problem I have with the report is that it's just lazy, irresponsible journalism.

I understand this is and will always be a Vikings town.  Even more so when the Vikings are having a good season, as they definitely are this year. That doesn't excuse Kare 11 trying to stir up controversy over at the U.

A simple look at the listing lets you know that it's been on the market for nearly three months.  Did Kare 11 omit this detail intentionally, or was it left out of the report in their haste to be the first outlet to break this "news"?

Either way, anyone who saw the report shouldn't read anything into it.  Brewster's not going anywhere, at least not now.
