ACC Awards Look Just Right So Far for Georgia Tech

Zachary OstermanDec 1, 2009

(Look, two All-ACC first team selections in one picture.)

So the ACC's all-conference teams were announced yesterday, and the conference's coach of the year today. How did the Jackets do? Pretty well.

Behold the Jackets who were selected:

  • Quarterback Josh Nesbitt, First Team, 50 of 80 possible points.
  • Running back Jonathan Dwyer, First Team, repeat selection, 67 of 80 possible points.
  • Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, First Team, 63 of 80 possible points.
  • Guard Cord Howard, First Team, 47 of 80 possible points.
  • Center Sean Bedford, First Team, 45 of 80 possible points.
  • Defensive end Derrick Morgan, First Team, 76 of 80 possible points.
  • Safety Morgan Burnett, Second Team, 51 of 80 possible points.
  • Linebacker Brad Jefferson, Honorable Mention, 16 of 80 possible points.
  • Paul Johnson, Coach of the Year, second-consecutive selection.

That's a pretty good showing. Just some random reaction:

Nesbitt makes sense. Christian Ponder and Jacory Harris would have also, but one was lost to injury a few weeks back and the other faded badly over the last half the season.

Dwyer makes sense, as does the other RB, Ryan Williams. I like the move of naming Clemson's C.J. Spiller the First Team specialist with Dwyer and Williams as the running backs, because frankly, I think both Dwyer and Williams are better pure running backs (I'll say that again, better pure running backs, not overall players) than Spiller.

He's the ACC's best player, but not its the best pure running back.

I would also be genuinely shocked if Spiller didn't win the ACC Player of the Year award running away, pun intended.

Howard and Bedford make plenty of sense, and I don't think I have to make a case for Derrick Morgan. Burnett and Jefferson are solid players, and frankly, Tech is lucky to have more than two defensive guys in this list at all.

Johnson also makes sense to me. He's proven himself to be one of the best coaches not just in the conference but in the country. According to preseason voting and most predictions, his team has once again exceeded expectations.

I was, however, surprised and disappointed to see David Cutcliffe (four of 40 possible votes) and Frank Spaziani (two of 40 possible votes) get so little love. Only the latter will be bowling this year, but both did a lot more than was expected with not a lot at their disposal.

Johnson was a good pick, the right pick, and Dabo Swinney finishing second also makes sense. But Cutcliffe and Spaz deserved better.

So what do you think about the selections? Agree? Disagree?

Sound off.
