2008 NBA Finals: There Can Be Only One Champion

Yesterday I was watching the game with my friend, who didn’t stop until now teasing me since the Lakers swiped out my Spurs in the western conference finals. He always calls me when his team, the Lakers, is playing well.

I particularly, was determinate that the Celtics would end this series yesterday, but for his luck and for the luck of Jack Nicholson the Lakers won the game.

Anyway, it’s not a big deal right? The way Lakers are playing and giving up points, it’s not a big deal. I just told him “I only know that the Cs are going to win this series.”

Ok, let’s get started. No team in the NBA history has overcome a 3-1 deficit in the finals to win the title, and as I remember, no team has won the last two games on the road since the league switched to 2-3-2 format in 1985. However, these are just statistics. It’s a new time, new seasons, and everything can happen.

Surely, the Los Angeles Lakers will try to break it down in the last two remaining games in Boston. The question that remains is that, can Lakers make history the way they are playing this series versus the Celtics?

They probably might, but let me tell you this: I honestly do not think and I do not even believe they can. They might win a game in Boston, but just a game because this series should be already over.

“The series ain’t over”, said Bryant Saturday, “this is far from over.”

Indeed Kobe, it seems that you were right the series is not over, yet.  However, leading by 19 points and almost losing the game, isn’t a good smart strategy, right!

 Thanks for Lamar Odom’s 20 points, 11 rebounds, and Gasol who finally could make his way out in this series finishing with 19 points and 13 rebounds. These guys really helped the Lakers win Game Five.

 I’m not mentioning Kobe Bryant’s performance so much because we all know what Kobe can do. He is who he is, the best player in the league. He can make points in very different ways. No matter who is guarding him, even though Paul Pierce did a very good job on him in Game Four, he still can score. However, if those guys out there don’t play well Tuesday…the Lakers are done.

The Celtics, on the other hand, are going to make sure the Lakers do not win in Boston. The “ Beat LA” sound will be so loud that the Celtics will come strong in that game because they know if somehow the Lakers win Tuesday, Game Seven will be tough not only physical but mentally.

Moreover, I’m pretty sure Doc Rivers will come out with a very thought-out defensive strategy to shut down Kobe and keep Lamar and Gasol out of the paint.

Note that the big three weren’t very productive yesterday. KG missed some free throws, RA had just 16 points. Those guys will come big Tuesday. I’m not a big fan of the Celtics though, but I must admit these guys are playing a great basketball.
