Serena Williams fines $82,500" target="_blank">Tennis player Serena Williams was fined $82,500 for her U.S. Open tirade—almost double the highest fine ever given for such an offense. She could also face suspension from the tournament if she commits another such “offense” at any Grand Slam over the next two years, according to The Ledger.

Bill Babcock, Grand Slam administrator, said in his ruling that if Williams is involved in a similar incident during this “probationary period,” she will face a fine of $175,000 and will be banned from the next U.S. Open.

“…if she does not have another offense in the next two years, the suspension is lifted,” Babcock told the Associated Press.

The incident that resulted in the fine occurred at the U.S. Open in September, when Williams “lashed out at a lineswoman after a foot-fault call at the end of her semifinal loss” to Kim Clijsters, according to the AP.

In the 1990s, Jeff Tarango was fined $48,000 for a Grand Slam offense.
