The Redskins Mix And Match Offense Can't Win

Fahim CarimNov 30, 2009

Had the Redskins hired Zorn properly and brought the staff and coordinator needed they would be in the thick of things right now but they did everything backwards now the Redskin offense is like a three headed goat. 6 horns 6 eyes three mouths and nothing but trouble.

They have an offensive consultant calling the pass plays, the offensive coordinator calling the running plays, the head coach also the QB coach is doing game management and calls the plays in the 2 minute drill. The same head coach stripped of that role for lack of effectiveness. Is it just me or is that weird. To make it weirder they have a Power football running game and a West Coast Offense passing game.

The West Coast Offense was a whole package, they run mostly sweeps and inside traps to keep the defense of balance while hitting with quick passes. I don't really see that working with a power running attack which tries to draw the defense inside then throw over the top on play fakes.

As you would expect the Redskins offense is inconsistent. The strangest thing is this bizarre arrangement almost works but not quite. They get something going every now and again but I have still never seen the 10 straight completions you see pretty regularly out of the WCO. They look sort of start and go. Don't get it wrong the offense if you call call it that is figuring a way forward thanks to the determination and leadership of Campbell who has refused to pout of give up in an awkward situation.

This is Vinny Cerrotos fault.  He is the one who hired the offensive coordinator before the head coach. Then he was forced to promote the same inexperienced offensive coordinator to head coach. He is the one who didn't know enough about the WCO to know that you need particular personnel to run it effectively and that the Redskins didn't have that personnel. He didn't realize to attempt to make a whole scale change and stay competitive was nearly impossible. It's his fault that he couldn't just man up to his mistake and fire the coach. He also failed to bring the help the head coach clearly needed in in a way that made it at least appear to have been a mutual decision. He also manage to turn off Holmgren, Shanahan and Gruden fellow west coast offensive coordinators from taking over the Redskins after the season is done with his humiliation of Zorn. Vinny, by his own incompetence, was forced to invent the "Pass West Power East offense" You can't even talk about keeping your job when you have brought such an unholy creation into existence.

Is it just me or is anyone else getting tired of seeing Carlos Rogers showing up on other peoples highlight reels? For a guy drafted that high he should be a shutdown corner. He is definitely not. He has just 6 career INT's .

Antrel Rolle 12 INT's

Rodney Pool 11 INT's

Nick Collins 15 INT's

OJ Atogwe 19 INT's

Kerry Rhodes 14 INT's

Even Lofa Latupu has 9 INT's and he's a linebacker.

All the players I have mentioned except for Rolle were drafted lower than him. Granted Carlos is better than Pacman Jones but that's about it. People say Jason Campbell's a bust then what about this bum? He was drafted much higher than Campbell. Yes he's solid, he gets an interception once every 10 games but he gets beat regularly too. It's not like he doesn't get INT's because people are scared to throw to his side of the field or something. Demarcus Ware was still available when they drafted him but I guess Carlos "the jackal" Rogers 6 INT's  in 5 years are a worth while trade for Ware's 60 plus sacks.

I'm not really that happy with 23 either, yes he has a bunch of picks, but most have been off balls tipped by other people. Deangelo Hall does nothing in run support or making routine tackles and gets beat pretty regularly too. Darrell Green was a tiny guy but he used to stick to people when they came his way. Darrell could really cover, if QB's made the mistake of going his way, Green would end up in the end-zone, "no dance mind you" just 6 points and high fives.

Last year the Redskins secondary seemed really good. This year not so good. You can blame people for not blitzing but the 'Skins linemen have been getting much more regularly to the QB this year. I expect to see more from the corners than this.
