10 Most Underrated NFL Players

Pro Sports AddictsNov 29, 2009

#10: John Abraham DE

This veteran is possibly one of the best 4-3 pass rushers in the NFL, but rarely gets any credit for it. He has had double digit sacks 5 times in his career, including a 16.5 sack year just last season. To add with the sacks, he has 31 forced fumbles in his career, so when he does hit you, he can cause turnovers and give the ball back to his offense. Young players like Jared Allen and Mario Williams are the popular choices when you want a DE in this league, but Abraham has been a solid force for the Falcons for many years.

#9: Derrick Mason WR

Another veteran player who gets almost zero credit for what he does for teams. He has always been a #1 WR. In Tennessee he was the #1 for Steve McNair, and he came to Baltimore and has been the #1 WR for this team since he got here. He currently ranks 28th all-time in receiving yards, and with a solid year this year and next year, he could move as high as 20th all time, which Rod Smith & Keenan McCardell currently hold. He's not going to give you alot of TD's, he isn't a big red zone threat, but he is a possession receiver who will help get the ball downfield, and has been consistent his entire career as a great #1 WR.

#8: Mewelde Moore RB

This is kind of my surprise guy in these underrated players, but I am in love with Mewelde Moore, and I'm upset he can't get a better role then a #3 back in a system. In Minnesota, he was the #2 back behind guys like Chester Taylor, but when Peterson came, he got the boot and found a home in Pittsburgh. His career high yards in season is 662, but that is purely because he hasn't gotten the opportunity. He is possibly the best receiving back in the NFL. In 06-07 in Minnesota, Moore only had 24 rushing opportunities, but he had 46 receptions for 468 yards. When a team needs a first down, and you are picking on running back in the entire NFL to throw the ball to, I may be picking Mewelde Moore.

#7: Owen Daniels TE

Possibly my favorite TE in the NFL, and that's because he puts up great numbers year in, and year out, and does it quietly. He hasn't been in the league long, but in 07, he was 6th among TE's in yards. In 08, he was 3rd. This year so far he is 4th. He has consistently been a great target for Schaub in Houston, and should start to be recognized as possibly the greatest receiving TE in the entire league, instead of barely being a top 10.

#6: Frank Gore RB

Gore had a breakout year in 06 with 1695 yards and 8 TD's, and hasn't had a season like that since. For some reason when players have a great breakout year, and then are solid but not as good as their breakout year, they get overlooked. Gore has consistently been one of the best backs in the league, and if he didn't get hurt this year, he would have been at the top of the stat's again. That is the only problem with Gore is his healthy, but when he is healthy he is one of the best in the league.

#5: Marques Colston WR

This kid is an absolute monster. His rookie year he was drafted in the 7th round, and put up 1038 receiving yards. Everyone asked if it was a one year fluke. He responded with a 1202 yard sophomore year. Then last year, Colston got injured in the first game of the season, and even with 760 yards receiving, he had a quiet year and alot of people forgot how dominant this kid was. This year he isn't getting as many yards as the Saints finally have a running game, but he is 2nd in the league in receiving TD's, and may possibly be the best red-zone thread in the entire NFL. Alot of people consider him a top 10 WR, but if he continues, he should be considered a top 3 or 5 WR in this league.

#4: Ben Roethlisburger QB

I know what some of you may be thinking, how is a QB with two superbowl rings be underrated? I ask myself the SAME question. When you ask fans of the league who the best QB's in the league are, you will hear Brady, Manning, Brees, & Eli before Ben all the time. You may even hear McNabb and Matt Ryan before Big Ben. It amazes me sometimes. Ben has won two superbowl rings, he is 1st in the NFL in completion percentage, and what he does in the pocket when its collapsing is just absolutely amazing to see. I guess he needs to win another championship before people consider him a top QB in this league, but he is 3rd best QB in the NFL in my eyes.

#3: Donald Driver WR

He would be higher, but I don't think he is quite as underrated as some think he is. He is a top WR in the league, but it's not like people don't say he is. If you ask for a top 15 WR list, he is most likely on everyones list. He should probably be top 10, which is why he is underrated, and is very reliable. Has been his entire career.

#2: London Fletcher LB

Easily one of the best, consistent LB's in the league. The most amazing stat is that he has played in all 176 contests of his 11-year career, starting 161. Entering 2009, he has started 135 consecutive games. Not only is he reliable, he is one of the best. He is at the top of the league this year in tackles. He is a leader for the Redskins, unfortunately the Redskins haven't been good enough for him to win a championship. I really hope that before his career comes to an end, he gets to play for a championship team.

#1: Thomas Jones RB

Last year, 5th in the league in rushing. Two years ago, 10th in the league in rushing. Thee years ago, 11th in the league in rushing. Only Thomas Jones and LaDanian Tomlinson have been in the top 11 in rushing yards each of the past three seasons. Since 2005, only LaDanian Tomlinson is ahead of Thomas Jones in rushing yards. But in alot of lists, Jones isn't even considered a top 10 back in the league. He may not get alot of TD's, but he gets alot of yards and puts his team in a position to get TD's. This year he is 5th in the league in rushing yards and is 4th in the league in TD's, so he can obviously score also, just hasn't been able to do both consistently. If he can find a way to do that, he could be up there with Peterson.
