Euro 2008: Sensational Turks Stun Czech Republic

Salaar ShamsiJun 15, 2008

Moments ago, we witnessed what is surely one of the greatest comebacks in the history of football especially the European Championships.

If you thought Spain's last minute winner over Sweden by David Villa was a thriller, I'll tell you, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Jan Koller gave Czech Republic the lead after 34 minutes which was later doubled by Jaroslav Plasil after the hour mark.

The Czech's were dominating the game and the Turks were preparing for another disappointing exit from a major tournament.

Tuncay, Nihat and Turan all came close with the odd opportunity, Servet Cetin's header came amazingly close.

Arda Turan gave the Turks a glimmer of hope in the 75 minute, where a right footed strike went into the goal.

Petr Cech then suffered the embarrassment of dropping a cross from Hamit Altintop, Nihat tapped the ball in and the Turkish supporters went up in a roar.

Colin Kazim Richards had two shots within the space of a minute, both quite close, Turkey were in the driving seat.

Tuncay Sanli's brilliant through ball to Nihat decieved the Czech defenders, Nihat kept his nerve to curve a strike which cannoned down off the cross bar and into the goal.

It was a truly remarkable game, Volkan Demirel was sent off towards the end for pushing Jan Koller.

Unbelievable is how I'd describe it.

Liverpool once made a brilliant comeback against AC Milan in the Champions League Final in Istanbul (2005), Manchester United did it against Bayern Munich in Barcelona (1999) but Turkey were outstanding, hats off to them and wishing them the best for the rest of the tournament.

Switzerland defeated Portugal in a dead rubber by a margin of 2-0, both goals were scored by Hakan Yakin.
