David Tyree a Permanent Giant?
As I’m looking over the headlines in my feed reader I come across Clark Judge’s article on New York Giants WR/ Super Bowl Hero, David Tyree. You remember Tyree, right? Made a pretty good catch in the last game of the year. Let me rephrase that…Made one of the greatest, most important, catches in Super Bowl and NFL History! So anyway, Judge ponders the fact that Tyree may not even make the Giants roster this season.Tyree is taking it professional like…
"“It doesn’t surprise me,” he said at the team’s mandatory mini-camp this week. “The reality of it is that every year I go in and compete, and you never know how it’s going to play out.
“You could’ve said it last year, and it’s probably been said the last three or four years that there’s no room for me on the roster. But I’m still here, and every time I’ve been given an opportunity in football games I’ve stepped up.”

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Something that jumped out at me was a poll that was posted on the page at CBSSports.com with the article. The question is this…”Did David Tyree earn a permanent spot on the Giants roster with his Super Bowl catch?”
Huh? Who thinks these things up? A Permanent roster spot? The only thing that makes that happen is if the NFL awards an extra placeholder spot on the roster for Super Bowl Champions. Maybe you can give one player a “Get out of Roster Cuts Free” card. I agree that Tyree should get that card for 2008, sure. So what kind of contract does a permanent roster spot get ya? They have to give in to whatever demands you make, correct?
Let’s look at some other notable Super Bowl names that did not receive this coveted Permanent Roster Spot and left for reasons that must come with the spot not being met like giving in to your demands for contract, playing time, firing a Coach you don’t get along with, or even going so far as being traded away.
- Joe Montana did a few good Super Bowl things for the 49′ers…he however was not awarded the Permanent Roster spot and was traded to the Chiefs.
- Jerry Rice…No permanent roster spot.
- Marcus Allen, you will not get your permanent roster spot, you shall join Joe in Kansas City.
- Mike Jones, your tackle in Super Bowl XXXIV will not earn you a permanent roster spot.
- Adam Vinatieri you had some good kicks. You will not be given a permanent roster spot.
The list could go on. All fun aside, I hope that Tyree does make the squad. He has an uphill road ahead with WR’s on the roster that contribute for more than 4 catches and 35 yards in the regular season. The addition of Mario Manningham in the NFL Draft doesn’t help. The guy does play a mean Special Teams and went to the Pro Bowl for it in 2005. That will be the reason they find a spot for him, if they do, not because of what could be the greatest catch EVER.
