2010 NFL Mock Draft, Who Does Your Team Need?

John ShireyNov 26, 2009

This year has been interesting, to say the least. Top Heisman contenders and NFL prospects have not lived up to their hype, but we have also seen unexpected superstars emerge. This draft order is based on the NFL standings right now.

Pick 1 Cleveland Browns, Jimmy Clausen QB Notre Dame

This pick was a difficult one, it all depends on how Brady Quinn plays, but if the draft were to happen today I think the Browns would pick a Quarterback. Clausen appears to be the number one option at Quarterback in this year’s draft, but other Quarterbacks like Ryan Mallett, Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy are all legitimate possibilities for the number one pick.

Pick 2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Ndamukong Suh DT Nebraska

Suh appears to be the best overall player in this year's draft. Tampa has many holes they need to fill before this team is solid again. Josh Freeman has played well this year and appears to be a solid Quarterback that could lead a playoff team, but they need a defensive leader. Suh possesses a lot of the same attributes that Warren Sapp had, and the Bucs would want nothing more than to get another defensive beast like Sapp.

Pick 3 St. Louis Rams, Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma

Sam Bradford would have been better off coming out in last years draft, where he would have probably been the number one pick. As you all know, Bradford has missed essentially the entire 2009 season, which obviously hurt his draft status. I still don't see him slipping out of the top five, especially with there being so many teams in need of a Quarterback.

Pick 4 Detroit Lions, Eric Berry SS Tennessee

Berry is an athletic freak, he is the best Safety to come out of college since the late Sean Taylor. Berry is a natural born leader as well; he is the heart and soul of that Tennessee defense. The Lions are finally starting to see glimpses of hope from some of their draft picks, Eric Berry and Louis Delmas could become one of the best Safety duos the NFL has seen in awhile.

Pick 5 Oakland Raiders, Carlos Dunlap DE Florida

I agree at times this year Dunlap has appeared lazy, but I just do not see Al Davis passing up "Baby Freak", he is a perfect combination of size (6'7" 290 lbs) and speed (4.61 in the 40-yard dash). Since Al Davis is known for his “logical” decisions this pick makes sense.

Pick 6 Washington Redskins, Russell Okung OT Oklahoma State

The Redskins have many issues to deal with, including Quarterback, but their Offensive Line has looked horrendous this year. Pro-Bowl left tackle, Chris Samuels’ career is nearing its end, so Okung would be a smart choice here. With Dan Snyder calling the shots though, I think Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow are both possibilities here, strictly due to their names.

Pick 7 Buffalo Bills, Trent Williams OT Oklahoma

Since Jason Peters’ departure this off-season the Bills have had major O-Line troubles. I know they drafted two young, good looking Lineman last year, but the Bills need to protect the Quarterbacks blind side, so maybe they can have a Quarterback that makes it through the entire season.

Pick 8 Kansas City Chiefs, Dez Bryant WR Oklahoma State

The Chiefs are in dyer need of some play makers, especially with the releasing of disgruntle Running Back, Larry Johnson. Dwayne Bowe can’t be the team’s only player that has the ability to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. Jamal Charles has played well and could possibly emerge as a good Running Back, but if they are one-dimensional, his career will have a similar outcome as Larry Johnson’s. Bryant did not get the chance to play much this year do to violating NCAA rules, but every time he is in the game he makes an impact. I just don’t see a player like that making it past a team like the Chiefs.

Pick 9 Seattle Seahawks, C. J Spiller RB Clemson

The Seahawks’ offense isn’t what it used to be, injuries have plagued them recently, and age is also becoming a problem. Spiller is the most complete Back in this year’s draft. He has a perfect combination of both speed and size. Spiller can give Seattle’s offense a spark that they have not seen since Shaun Alexander’s record breaking 2005 season.

Pick 10 San Francisco 49ers (from Carolina), Taylor Mays FS USC

I just can’t help but notice the similarities between Mays and 49er’s Hall Of Fame Safety, Ronnie Lott. Mays is big enough to play Linebacker, yet he is so quick and athletic he can cover just about anyone. In his career at USC Mays has delivered bone crushing hits, as well as making some incredible picks, he is exactly what the Niners need to give them one of the leagues best defenses.

Pick 11 Denver Broncos (from Chicago), Colt McCoy QB Texas

Kyle Orton has played decent football this year, but recently we have seen that he is not going to lead them deep into the Playoffs, he is strictly a “game manager”, and the Broncos are not good enough to win with a ”game manager” under center. McCoy has had one of the most successful careers in college football history, but how will he do in the NFL? McCoy appears to fit well in the Broncos system, but if he is stuck in there to early his career may be ruined.

Pick 12 Tennessee Titans, Gerald McCoy DT Oklahoma

Since Albert Haynesworth has left the Titans Defensive line has been good, but not great. The Titans pride themselves on their Defensive Line, the have for years. Kyle Vanden Bosch has not been performing at the level he once was, with Haynesworth. I believe the addition of McCoy would improve the Titans entire D-Line, which would improve their defense and get them back to their 2008 form.

Pick 13 New York Jets, Sergio Kindle DE/OLB Texas

The Jets already addressed the most obvious need, the Wide Receiver position, by acquiring Braylon Edwards from the Browns. Now the Jets need to focus on getting a good pass rush, and no one in college football does that better than Sergio Kindle. The Jets are a good young team and I think in their case, time is the best medicine, in a couple of years when Sanchez is used to the system and is comfortable with his offense they will be a very complete team.

Pick 14 San Francisco 49ers, Brandon Spikes ILB Florida

With the addition of Brandon Spikes, the Niners’ Linebackers will be one of the best cores of linebackers in the league. Their defense will be one like the Ravens defense of the late 90’s and the early 2000’s. It will be linebacker based, but solid, through and through. Spikes is the best Linebacker in this years draft and coach Singletary will use this draft to take his defense to the next level.

Pick 15 Miami Dolphins, Arrelious Benn WR Illinois

Ted Ginn Jr. has not done what he was brought in to do; he has been exactly what he was in college, a great return man and an average receiver, the Dolphins need a legitimate number one receiver. Benn has been nothing short of phenomenal his entire career at Illinois and runs a solid 4.4 forty.

Pick 16 Atlanta Falcons, Terrence Cody DT Alabama

“Mount Cody” has been an absolute beast this season for Alabama, including those two massive blocked kicks in the Tennessee game. Cody, a Junior College transfer is a key part to Alabama’s success this season. Cody also has a good story, he showed up to Alabama weighing in at over 420 lbs. Though Cody is strictly a run stopper, he has potential to be one of the most feared Defensive Tackles in the NFL.

Pick 17 Houston Texans, Joe Haden CB Florida

Joe Haden is not a gambling corner, as a result he does not have that many interceptions, but he has aloud very few Touchdowns (one this season). The Texans offense is one of the leagues best, but their defense is not performing at the same level. They have several good, young players in their front seven, but their secondary has allowed too many big plays this season. Dunta Robinson is a distraction, so maybe if they bring in someone else that can cover guys like Reggie Wayne twice a year, they can get rid of him.

Pick 18 Baltimore Ravens, Rolando McClain ILB Alabama

The Ravens still have one of the leagues best defenses, but age is defiantly starting to play a role. Ray Lewis will be 35 at the start of next season, the Ravens are going to need to draft a Linebacker soon so he can me mentored by Ray for a couple of years. McClain has been a standout at Linebacker this season and is the second best Linebacker in this year’s draft.

Pick 19 Green Bay Packers, Ciron Black OT LSU

Black has been a beast his whole career at LSU; he probably would have gone higher had he come out last season though. The Packer’s Offensive Line has been terrible this season; Aaron Rodgers has been sacked more than any other Quarterback in the NFL. Black would be an improvement but the Packers will need to devote more than just this pick to their Offensive Line if they expect to win anything anytime soon.

Pick 20 New York Giants, Syd’Quan Thompson CB California

The Giants really do not have many needs; their secondary is good, but not really up to par with the rest of their defense. Thompson has played well at Cal this year and is the second best corner in this year’s draft. He isn’t a tall corner, but he can jump with the best of them.

Pick 21 Pittsburgh Steelers, Bryan Bulaga OT Iowa

The Steelers Offensive Line was one of the worst ever to win a Superbowl, and hasn’t really improved much this season. Bulaga is an athletic lineman, with good size, 6’6”, 315 lbs. Bulaga has exceptional footwork for a Lineman of his size.

Pick 22 Philadelphia Eagles, Jerry Hughes OLB TCU

Hughes is a great Linebacker with a good combination of both speed and size. He has been a leader on his TCU defense for the past two years. The Eagles are another team that needs to get younger on defense. It is better to do so now, before your experienced players retire and you are forced to throw in a rookie that has no formal training from a Probowl caliber player or experience.

Pick 23 Seattle Seahawks (from Denver) Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas

Mallot’s sudden rise to fame makes him a risky first round pick, but the Seahawks need a Quarterback. Mallett’s combination of size and strength are exceptional for an NFL Quarterback, but he would benefit from sitting behind Hasselbeck and Wallace for a couple of years prior to actually starting at Quarterback.

Pick 24 Jacksonville Jaguars, Tim Tebow QB/"Ticket Seller" Florida

The Jaguars are having a pretty good season, yet they can not sell enough tickets to avoid a blackout of all of their home games. Tim Tebow defiantly has potential to be a good NFL Quarterback, but he needs to be rewired into one. For now he will serve strictly as a “ticket seller”, because there is no bigger celebrity in North Florida than Tim Tebow.

Pick 25 Dallas Cowboys, Sam Young OT Notre Dame

Young has been the anchor of the Notre Dame O-Line since Jimmy Clausen has taken over at Quarterback, and has done an excellent job of protecting his blind side. The inside of the Cowboys O-Line is one of the NFL’s best, but their Tackles are getting beat off the line far too often, Young has good footwork for a Lineman his size.

Pick 26 San Diego Chargers, Toby Gerhart RB Stanford

Gerhart is a pretty risky pick, contrary to what his stats may say. He has performed extraordinarily well this season, practically carrying the entire Cardinal team on his back. LaDianian Tomlinson has not performed at the level we are used to this season, Darren Sproles has proved that he is simply a complimentary Back; he can not handle the starting role. I think Gerhart and Sproles could work well together and be one of the best tandems in the league in several years.

Pick 27 Arizona Cardinals, Greg Hardy DE Ole Miss

Greg Hardy has struggled with injuries his entire career, which may mean he drops out of the first round. When he is healthy, Hardy is one of college footballs most feared pass rushers; he has a perfect combination of speed and strength for an NFL Defensive End. The Cardinals offense is one of the leagues best, the defense is good and proved they can get it done in the playoffs, but the Cards need a little more pressure coming off the edge.

Pick 28 Cincinnati Bengals, Damian Williams WR USC

Williams is unlike any receiver the Bengals have ever had, he’s never been arrested, fined or investigated. He is a good route runner, with great hands, but injury problems have been the only thing holding him back from being college football’s most elite receiver. The Bengals receivers are getting old; Ochocinco and Laveranues Coles will each be 32 at the beginning of next season.

Pick 29 New England Patriots, Brandon Lang DE Troy

Leave it to the Patriots to find a diamond in the ruff; Lang has been more than stellar for the Trojans this season. Troy is notorious for producing NFL defensive superstars such as Osi Umenyiora and DeMarcus Ware. Lang has been a great pass rusher for Troy the past couple of seasons and could be Richard Seymour’s replacement.

Pick 30 Minnesota Vikings, Sean Weatherspoon OLB Missouri

Weatherspoon has been leading the Tigers defense of several years and has shown glimpses of extreme talent that would have him going in the top five, but there are plays, quarters, or even whole games where he just seems to disappear. His severe inconsistency has lowered his draft status, but putting him in the middle of an incredibly strong Vikings defense should help him out.

Pick 31 New Orleans Saints, Arthur Jones DT Syracuse

The Saints are a very well rounded team, but the Defensive Tackle position has shown some inconsistency. Jones should be able to be rotated into the starting lineup for a couple of years before becoming the full-time starter and forming an elite interior defensive line, including himself and Sedrick Ellis.

Pick 32 Indianapolis Colts, Selvish Capers OT West Virginia

The only weak point on the Celts offense this year has come from the Tackle position. Tony Ugoh has allowed way to many defenders to blow mast him or knock him over. Capers, though he doesn’t have ideal strength for an NFL Offensive Tackle he is quick and willing to throw his body at defenders.

Leave me any comments, questions or concerns you may have. I would also appreciate it if you could point out any errors I may have made, thank you.
