Smoke Signals: We need Hawkeye and Trapper John

Mark ButerbaughNov 24, 2009

Who is hurt on the Redskins? Easier to ask who isn’t. Here is the rundown again:

"

OG Chad Rinehart: Broken fibula against Dallas and now on injured reserve. Out for the season.

CB DeAngelo Hall: Sprained medial collateral ligament against Dallas and could miss this Sunday’s game against Philadelphia.

DT Albert Haynesworth: Injured ankle against Denver and missed the Dallas game. May miss the Philadelphia game, too. Status uncertain.

TB Ladell Betts: Torn anterior cruciate ligmament and medial collateral ligaments against Dallas. On injured reserve and lost for the season.

TB Clinton Portis: Continuing to suffer from blurred vision due to concussion suffered November 6 against Atlanta. Will not play this Sunday against Philadelphia and may not play the week after against New Orleans.

FB Eddie Williams: Leg injury and on injured reserve. Lost for the season.

And as if all that wasn’t enough, it looks like TE Chris Cooley isn’t coming back this season. He’s probably headed for injured reserve. Read it.

It all sucks, but nobody outside of the Redskins and their fan base gives a damn. London Fletcher gets it right:

"

“Injuries happen throughout the course of the season on every team in the NFL,” linebacker London Fletcher said. “Obviously we’ve had more than our fair share of them. But the thing is, nobody is going to feel sorry for us. The game is still going to be played on Sunday, they’re not going to cancel the season. We’re not feeling sorry for ourselves either.

“It’s an opportunity for somebody else to step up and play,” he continued. “That’s the way you have to look at it. Not get caught up in all the things that aren’t going well for us and just come out prepared to practice well, prepare for a really good Philadelphia team in their place.”

"

Rick Snider writes that the season is lost and the best thing the Redskins can do for guys like Portis and Cooley is to leave them on the shelf. I basically agree with that. Washington is headed for a 12-loss-or-more season whether Portis plays or not. Let the other guys get some carries and take your lumps. Meanwhile, no need for Portis to risk his long-term health on this dud of a season. Read it.

WR Devin Thomas will become the team’s primary kick returner now that Rock Cartwright is the starting tailback. That seems fine. Thomas returned kicks in college and did well against the Cowboys last Sunday, bringing one back 38 yards. Read it.
