Suprised But Not Pleasantly Surprised: The Cena V. Sheamus Debacle
I was definitely surprised with what transpired in the 8-man battle royal on Monday Night Raw. Once Randy Orton weaseled his way into the match, I was sure it was all over. However, neither Randy Orton nor Kofi Kingston, a superstar who is due to break into the WWE title scene very soon, came out on top. Instead, the recently acquired and still very inexperienced superstar, Sheamus, won the battle royal. Although this creates a new opponent for John Cena and was definitely a surprise, I don't think it is a pleasant one for the following reasons:
1) Experience
Sheamus was on ECW for about 4 months where his biggest rival was Golddust. He would benefited from a longer feud with Shelton Benjamin. Then, he moved to Raw where he faced Jamie Noble twice and a local competitor, both of which were 1/2 his size. I like Sheamus and I think he is a future world champion, but he hasn't proven himself among the ranks of the elite.
2) Predictable match outcome at TLC pay-per-view
One thing is for certain. John Cena will win and Sheamus will then be out of the WWE title picture entirely. Sheamus just isn't ready yet. So, what is the point? I know I won't be interested in that match, because the outcome is 100% predictable. I don't care how much Sheamus pummels Cena over the next 3 weeks.
3) WWE title loses credibility
This title match just boosts John Cena's stats. Not convinced? Ok, then how about this? What about all the other great wrestlers who have done much more in their careers and have yet to get a world title shot? Soon they are going to have Santino Marella v. John Cena for the WWE title. Either way you look at it, the WWE title loses credibility.
In summary, I applaud the WWE for trying to make a fresh main event match for Raw. But, it is being done the wrong way. Build up Kofi a bit more with Orton and then have Kofi contend for the title. Remember, the goal is to create new main eventers. Sheamus is NOT a main eventer and won't be for quite some time. He just hasn't paid his dues.
