The Sunday Morning BCS Report: Week 12

Dan SmithNov 22, 2009

Here is what we know:

Florida, Texas, Alabama, TCU, and Boise State all beat inferior competition to remain undefeated, along with Cincinnati, who had a bye this week.

Florida and Alabama are going to meet in the SEC Title game and unless Florida State or Auburn pulls off a major upset, then both teams will be 12-0 in that game.

Texas will play Nebraska in the Big XII Title game and unless Texas A&M pulls off a major upset, then Texas will be 12-0 in that game.

Oregon and Oregon State will play in an in-season conference title game as the Civil War will determine who plays Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. We could see an OSU versus OSU Rose Bowl, but more than likely, it will be the Ducks versus the Bucks.

Pittsburgh and Cincinnati will also meet in an in-season conference title game for the Big East crown. I think that both of these teams are BCS bound, which is hard to believe when the Big East did not seem like a good conference at the start of the year but that is why pencils have erasers.

The ACC has a conference title game, and I say good for them. I will say that the ACC might be pretty solid next year with Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Miami at the front of an improved conference.

Here are the stories from Week 11:

Ohio State beat Michigan again. LSU wasted the last 30 seconds in a loss to Ole Miss. Arizona ensured that they will still be the only Pac-10 team to not go to the Rose Bowl, with their epic double-overtime loss to Oregon.

Colt McCoy passed former Georgia QB David Greene for the most wins in college football history with 43. Tim Tebow passed former LSU running back Kevin Faulk's record of rushing touchdowns in the SEC with 54. Max Hall passed former Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer with the most wins at BYU with his 30th win.

There have been some great quarterbacks to come out of BYU over the years, Super Bowl winning quarterbacks like Steve Young and Jim McMahon.

Cal beat Stanford as the band stayed off of the field. In a game unrelated to the BCS story, Harvard came back to beat Yale in another rivalry game. In the longest running non-BCS rivalry, Lehigh beat Lafayette in overtime in the 145th meeting between the two teams.

Here is the hot seat:

Charlie Weis has built a dynamic offense led by Jimmy Clausen, Golden Tate, and a healthy Michael Floyd. He is the head coach yet he has not given any attention to his defense and as good as Notre Dame is on offense, they have not been able to outscore all of their opponents this season.

The easy fix is to fire Weis, pay him his huge buyout, and start over. Here is the thing, Notre Dame, who is going to come in and return you to national prominence? The days of Notre Dame being a title contender are long passed, so the money pit you keep filling to find that tradition is growing deeper with every fired coach.

Weis has been given a chance, but he has only done half of the job. He should be allowed to fulfill his contract as the head coach and actually be the head coach, not the glorified offensive coordinator that has led to his average stint as head coach at Notre Dame.

It's your money, Notre Dame. So if you want to pay two coaches next year, more power to you, but what are you really buying at this point? You gave this guy too much money for way too many years when he won with Tyrone Willingham's players, so you might have to bite the bullet and ride this thing out.

Rich Rodriguez of Michigan is also in trouble, as the Wolverines are not going bowling after a 4-0 start this season. He is two years into his role as head coach, and he deserves another year. This guy, unlike Weiss, actually built a powerhouse program at West Virginia and building a good program takes time. I know that Jim Harbaugh is out there, but he isn't bringing Toby Gerhart and Andrew Luck with him.

Again, it's your money, Michigan, so if you want to pay two coaches next year to be an average team and not beat Ohio State, then more power to you.

Now, Mark Mangino is mired in a six-game losing streak and they are out for blood in Kansas. He did make KU relevant in football for the first time ever and when he was winning, he was coach of the year. Now, he is having to answer questions about the way he handles himself and his players.

This one is a little different because if Kansas can fire Mangino with cause then they won't have to pay two coaches next year to become a forgotten college football program.

Kansas probably has to fire Mangino though since he will not be the same recruiter with all of these allegations running rampant about him.
