Why Its Great To Be A Hawkeye- Our Case For The BCS
I have been an Iowa Hawkeye since December 31st 1984 when I first visited campus as a prospective student. I had other choices, Columbia U in New York, Indiana University and Villanova but I fell in love with the place and so that is where I went my heart always leading the way. I have met Hawkeyes from Brazil, Russia, China and even Ann Arbor Michigan and we all are the same passionate about the Hawks and never jerks. I do not know any group of people I would rather hang out with than Iowa Hawkeyes.
This year 2009 the Iowa Hawkeye football team demonstrated why it is great to be a Hawkeye and also why Iowa should get the second spot in the BCS. I am not going to argue games won or lost here what I am going to argue is that a school like Iowa and fans/students like Iowa's should be rewarded for being what I think are the best and most well mannered fans in all of College football. Is there any more passionate group of fans? Does any other state shut down for the game? There are many reasons we deserve an at large BCS bid.
Lets start first with Iowa City, a Unesco City of Literature home to the Hamburg Inn #2 (great Burgers and best blueberry pancakes on earth) the Iowa Writer's Workshop and most importantly Kinnick Stadium. The spirit of the martyred Nile Kinnick sits over that place that he called his favorite place on earth. Iowa City has given the world Tennessee Williams, Flannery O'Conner and Diablo Cody too. Iowa City is an Athens in the middle of America and is home to a great little town with allot of bars and the Old Capital.
The state of Iowa is proud of their educational heritage and if there exists a better group of people than Iowans I have not met them. Maybe that is why Americans let Iowans select their president every four years? Iowans are courteous, generous, respectful and passionate about their Hawkeyes. In a normal bowl year they bring 30,000 fans to a second tier game.
The entire state and the millions of alumni around the world tune in for games with devotion. Iowa has 3 million people and perhaps 600,000 living alumni but they will bring more fans than Penn State or Boise State and they will be pleasant as well as passionate that cannot be said for some of our SEC brethren.
Finally to the Team. Iowa went 10-2 they barely lost to Ohio State and they did this with a team that made up of working men's players rather than big stars. They are led by a great coach who never whines and never complains. Is there anything better than Ferentzball??
So I plead with you all from the Fiesta Bowl and Orange Bowl and all the rest pick our Hawkeyes we won't disappoint you and we promise to bring pork tenderloins for every one- thanks Hawks for a great season and eat just one more Hamburg Inn Blueberry pancake for me OK??
