High Flying Dutch Strike Again

Dakota RubinJun 13, 2008

For all those out there that thought the Netherlands first game blitzing of Italy was just a fluke, you were sorely mistaken.

The attack minded, skilled Dutch are here to stay and thus far looking like the class of Euro 2008.

Sure there were problems today and if France buried all of their chances (yes Henry that is a direct reference to you) this game would have been very different.

But really, when was the last time a team won any tournament without a little luck?

Not only is lady luck on the Dutch sidelines but so if superior skill and myriad spectacular players who are at top form.

The Dutch have thus far scored seven goals in two games scored by six different players.  The only player with two is Wesley Sneijder who has scored two of the more spectacular goals of the tournament.

Whether it is Van Nistelrooy or Kuyt, Sneijder, Robben, Van Persie or Bronckhorst doing the scoring, the Netherlands have been on fire going forward and there doesn't seem to be any team in the world that can slow them down.

Coming in to this tournament the overriding opinion was that while the Dutch may well be the best team going forward they were one of the worst at the back.

But through two games they have only given up one goal and while the back line has looked shaky Van der Sar has looked as good as ever in goal.

Maybe the idea that the best defense is a good offense actually has some merit.

While both Italy and France are known as great defensive teams, they were both absolutely shell shocked by a Dutch attack that was utterly flawless at points in both games.

And with such devastating players going forward with such speed for the Netherlands, the French and Italians both looked hesitant to send too many players forward for fear of a deadly counter attack, something both teams fell victim to.

Whether the Dutch decide to play their top squad against Romania or not is yet determined either way this team is still incredibly dangerous and will be a force to be reckoned with for the rest of the tournament.
