Patriots' Mac Jones on Cam Newton: It's His Show, I'm There to Support Him
April 30, 2021
Mac Jones became the first quarterback taken by the New England Patriots in the first round of the draft since 1993, but the No. 15 overall pick isn't necessarily expecting any changes to the team's offense any time soon.
Jones said he viewed his role on the team as one that would support quarterback Cam Newton rather than take the offense from him.
Newton, who led the Patriots to their worst season since 2000 in the wake of Tom Brady's departure to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, re-signed with the team on a one-year deal this offseason. New England has made significant upgrades this offseason, with Nelson Agholor, Kendrick Bourne, Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry set to bolster an offense that will be without the recently retired Julian Edelman.
Whether Jones immediately inherits the group or not may not matter to him, as he told reporters that he "wanted to go to the Patriots all along."
