The biggest question coming into the NFL draft was which quarterback the San Francisco 49ers would select with the No. 3 overall pick. The Niners kept the answer close to the vest.

So close, in fact, that they didn't "tell their coaches or scouts their pick," according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Most people inside the organization didn't know Trey Lance was the selection until it was literally announced on Thursday night, per that report.

Talk about controlling the narrative.

Coming into the night, rumors persisted that Alabama's Mac Jones would be the selection. And perhaps it came down to the wire. Surely the team's top decision-makers determined that the decision was on a need-to-know basis.

And just about everyone didn't need to know.
