Vince Young Magical Again?

Vince Young has lived quite the life over the short 26-year span that he has lived. He grew up a poor child in Houston, dominated high school football on his way to the University of Texas, where in his final year had one of the greatest individual performances ever, knocking off Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and the rest of the USC Trojans on his way to nearly single-handedly winning the Longhorns the National Championship.

He was then drafted third overall to the Tennessee Titans, at the request of then Titans QB Steve McNair. The team started slowly, one of the worse starts they had seen in recent years. Then, Vince’s magic came in. He turned the season around for the team, and ended up leading the Titans to a wildcard birth, something football fans would have called “impossible”.  

There were high expectations of Young going into the 08 season, as demonstrated by his appearance on the cover of the infamous Madden video game. And just as infamous as the game, the Madden Curse took over. Young suffered a slight injury, and played disappointingly, turning the ball over many times but still leading the team to victory. He was then replaced as QB1 by the aging Kerry Collins, who led the team to an AFC title, and an eventual conference semi-final loss. His depression was evident, seen by his alleged attempted suicide.

Things seemed to be over for Young in Nashville, but he is now being given another chance. Old Man Collins has not been able to get it done, and after starting the season 0-6, head coach Jeff Fisher has given the ball back to Young. He has obliged. Since his first start this year, Tennessee is yet to lose a game and (very, veeerrryyyy) slowly climbing up the standings.

So now we have a fun story to follow in the NFL. Can Young use his magic again to lead the Titans back to the playoffs? The realist says no, but stranger things have happened. With their schedule, it is possible for the Titans to finish 9-7, and then it will be up to the other guys.

It also raises the question as to whether or not this means Vince will continue to be the future of the team, or if this is just a brief stint in the Titans overall strategy. And lastly…what does this mean for KC? Is he now done? In his late thirties, he doesn’t have many years left. 

With six Sports Illustrated covers already under his belt, he could very well be making it seven.
