Justin Fields Talks Trevor Lawrence, 2021 NFL Draft, Urban Meyer to Jags, More
Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields addressed multiple topics in an interview Wednesday, including the upcoming 2021 NFL draft.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, Fields was asked about the possibility of going No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars and whether he is better than Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence:
"I'm not going to put out there what I think makes me better because I don't want to cause any controversy," Fields said. "But, of course, you have self-confidence that you're the best player in the nation."
While Lawrence is the heavy favorite to go No. 1 overall in the draft, Fields need only point to what happened when they played against each other in the Sugar Bowl earlier this month.
Fields led Ohio State to a 49-28 victory while throwing for 385 yards, six touchdowns and one interception.
Lawrence was no match for Fields on that night, as he mustered 400 yards, two touchdowns and one interception through the air.
Despite the contrasting performances, Lawrence still seems to have the leg up because of his more extensive resume, the fact that he has won a national championship and his consistency as a passer.
Whoever goes No. 1 overall will land with a Jags team that went 1-15 last season. Despite the record, the Jaguars are now a desirable destination because of the arrival of Urban Meyer as the team's new head coach.
Meyer was a national championship-winning coach at Florida and Ohio State, and although Fields never played under him with the Buckeyes, he had nothing but good things to say about Meyer on Wednesday.
"Coach [Ryan] Day recruited me [to Ohio State], but I mean I've heard great things about Coach Meyer and the way he coaches," Fields said. "So, I wouldn't be surprised if he had great success down in Jacksonville."
While Meyer never coached Fields, he undoubtedly kept close tabs on his former program, so he is well aware of Fields' dual-threat ability and what he has accomplished over the past couple of seasons.
Jacksonville's No. 1 overall pick will not be decided by Meyer alone, but with the former Ohio State head coach at the helm, perhaps Fields over Lawrence isn't completely out of the question.
