NHL: Tonight's Award Winners Leaked?

Greg CaggianoJun 12, 2008

Following up on a report from SI.com, I bring you the news that the 2008 NHL Award winners (ceremony at 7pm on Versus) may have been leaked accidently.

It appears that T-shirts have appeared on NHL.com already stating that Alex Ovechkin has won the Hart trophy, leading them to be pulled off the market. NHL Spokesman, Frank Brown responded with this:

"In an effort to offer our fans the merchandise they want in a timely manner following an event such as the NHL Awards, our licensees prepare product for all possible outcomes..."

But as SI's Sarah Kwak writes, "Considering the awards are pretty much all figured out right after the regular season ends, this explanation doesn't make any sense. They have two months to plan for who the winner is. 'All possible outcomes' just doesn't apply."

So is it possible for the NHL to have accidentally revealed to us who all the winners are? Once again, SI reports that on the NHL.com trophy page, all the awards are listed there with the candidates next to it, and Ovechkin's picture appears next to the Hart trophy. Combine that with the T-shirt incident, and we may have quite a controversy on our hands.

"I think somebody didn't think it through when they were pasting these up on the site and left them in the order of votes, thus making the first person the actual winner." Sarah Kwak writes, and this may be true. So don't be surprised if these players win the awards tonight:

Hart: Alexander Ovechkin

Vezina: Evgeni Nabokov

Norris:Niklas Lidstrom

Calder: Patrick Kane

Lady Byng:Jason Pominville

Selke: Henrik Zetterberg

Jack Adams: Mike Babcock

Masterton: Jason Blake

Pearson Award: Alexander Ovechkin

Just an accidental mistake? Or an over anxious marketing scheme? We won't know until tonight at 7pm on Versus...
