Bailey, Coghlan Win ROY Awards

Andrew Bailey has been named the 2009 AL Rookie of the Year winner after a 6-3 season with a 1.84 ERA and holding opponents to a .167 batting average.

Andrew Bailey 6-3, 1.84 ERA is the winner of the AL Rookie of the Year Award. Bailey’s 88 points led second place Elvis Andrus who had 65 points.

Bailey posted incredible numbers in 83 innings on the mound. He gave up only 47 hits for a .167 batting average against him. He struck out 91 while allowing only 24 walks with a 0.88 WHIP (walks, hits per inning pitched).

Bailey joins Ben Grieve 1998, Bobby Crosby 2004 and Huston Street 2005 to become the fourth Oakland Athletics player to win the AL Rookie of the Year Award in the last 12 years. He didn’t allow an earned run after July 29.

His strikeouts to walks ratio for the last three months of the season were:

July: 15-4

August: 7-0

September-October: 15-2

That is a 37-6 ratio since June. He also didn’t hit a batter in 83 innings.

Coghlan Wins NL Rookie of the Year Award after hitting .372 after the All Star game.


Chris Coghlan of the Marlins won the 2009 NL Rookie of the Year Award in a close race with J.A. Happ with Coghlan garnering 105 points to the 94 points for Happ.

Coghlan didn’t join the Marlins till May 8 and was hitting .212 at the end of May. He hit .294 in June raising his average to .262. He hit a lackluster .231 in July finishing the month with a .252 average.

 

Caught Fire in August

Coghlan caught fire hitting .385 in August and .382 in September and posted 47 hits in both months. Then he was 6-13 in October hitting .462 for the month and finished the season hitting .321.

He was second in batting among the Marlins with Hanley Ramirez hitting a league leading .342 with Coghlan sixth in hitting with only Pablo Sandoval,  Albert Pujols,Todd Helton and Joey Votto having a higher average than Coghlan.
