Chicago Bears Fans: Dont Treat Cutler Like Grossman

Chris TucciNov 16, 2009

When Rex Grossman, a first round draft pick, out of the University of Florida came off  bench for an out of shape, washed up Kordell Stewart, the Chicago Bears saw immediate potential. Although Rex was a little small for his position, he had a cannon for an arm and much more positives then negatives. Unfortunately, Rex's entry into the NFL was cut short by a number of unfortunate injuries in his first couple of seasons.

Fast forward to 2006. Lovie Smith states without a second guess that, "Rex Grossman is our Quarter Back", a statement that would later become famous in Chicago media. But at the time, Lovie was right. In the month of September in the Superbowl season, Rex out played almost every other QB in the NFL. He even won NFC player of the month in September! The problems arose when the offensive line simply couldn't handle any defense in the NFL. Rex was literally running for his life, and making split second decisions that often resulted in interceptions or fumbles. The fans in Chicago reached their breaking point in super bowl XLI, when the bears blew it. Rex Grossman was immediately blamed for the game despite the fact that the defense was awful, the running game was abandoned, and the offensive line was thrown around like a rag doll. Lovie Smith was out coached, the defense was embarrassed, and yeah, Rex played a bad game. But it wasn't the Bears who lost the big one in the eyes of the fans, it was good old scapegoat, "Wrecks" Grossman.

This continued on for the remaining 2 years of Grossman's time in chicago. Years that he spent riding the bench. Until this summer, when Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo finally gave into the pleas from the fans, and traded for pro bowl QB Jay Cutler.

Jay Cutler is a fantastic QB. He has amazing abilities. But like any other QB, Jay needs help. The bears have once again made the crucial mistake of finding their guy, and letting him go to waste. Jay Cutler is our QB, and if we are lucky, he will be until he retires. But the time to find him some support is NOW.

Chicago Bears fans have the tendency to toss their QB under the bus when times are bad. They always have. But this time, bears fans, we cant make the same mistake. Jay Cutler is one of the best in the game. Don't scream for another quarter back, scream for a new offensive line, a new receiver, ANYTHING that will help Jay do what he can do.

Bears fans, its time to find another way of constructive criticism, because if Jay Cutler is chased out of town in the same fashion Rex Grossman was, it may be 100 years before the bears find their new Sid Luckman, when all the while he was right in front of them.

Jay Cutler is our Quarter Back, and its time to treat him that way.
