MW: Romo Means Tripod in Latin

Multi-Millionaire Quarterback for America’s team: Check.  Nail Jessica Simpson: Check.  Play better than bogey golf at Torrey Pines under U.S. Open conditions: Check.  As a die-hard Redskins fan, it is in my blood to hate all things Cowboy, but I have to give props when they are due.  All playoff choking aside, of course.  Tony Romo, along with Justin Timberlake, Matt Lauer and everyman John Atkinson, participated in the U.S. Open Golf Challenge this past Friday and fired a 13 over 84.  Romo is no slouch on the links, boasting a 2.2 handicap index, however, it’s unlikely he’s ever played under conditions like this before.  This years open, teeing off tomorrow at Torrey Pines’ South Course in San Diego, is the longest course in Open history, boasting 7,643 yards of gnarled trees, giving the course its name.  Romo had to battle the trademark deep rough, that makes the Open one of toughest tournaments each season.  There were camera crews, galleries and Johnny Miller commentating.  It was about as close to the playing in the real thing as you can get.  Leading up to the event, PGA tour pros, including  Tiger Woods, scoffed at the notion an amateur could break 100.  In case you’re keeping score at home, Woods shot an 85 as amateur in the second round of the 1995 Open.   The only knock on Romo’s round, was that it exceeded six hours.   Is that really much longer than your average waggle-filled Sergio round?  Timberlake was no slouch either, posting a 98 on the day.  Lauer checked in with an even 100 and Atkinson brought up the rear with a 43 over 114.  Atkinson was chosen to play with the three celebrities after his essay was chosen from 56,374 applicants seeking a spot in the Challenge.  Atkinson, a cancer survivor and medical salesman from Nebraska, was thrilled just to be in the event, stating “At some point I just didn’t really care, I just wanted to enjoy it.”  Should be a fun weekend for Romo as he kicks back, enjoys Jessica’s rack company and watches the pros take on the course he handled easier than a field goal snap.
