NHL Trade Rumors: Latest Reports on Torey Krug, Kyle Palmieri and More
It's trading season, baby.
The rumors are starting to come in fast and furious, and we've accumulated some of the juiciest tidbits below.
We start with Torey Krug, who can't be traded himself since he's a free agent. However, he can see his negotiating rights dealt to a team interested in gaining an advantage in signing him. And Frank Seravalli of TSN reported that there has been "significant interest in teams" to trade for those rights.
Seravalli added that he believed the last offer the Boston Bruins made to Krug was a six-year deal worth $6.5 million per season.
Krug, 29, played in 61 games for the Bruins this season, posting nine goals and 40 assists in 20 minutes and 29 seconds of average ice time.
Krug will be one of the top defensemen available on the market and is one of the better offensive blue-liners in the league, so he'll likely have major interest, so don't be surprised if his negotiating rights get traded.
In terms of more traditional trades, Kyle Palmieri is a player who could be on the move.
While David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that the New Jersey Devils and Palmieri have held "preliminary contract discussions" heading into the final year of his contract, he added that the player has "been the subject of trade speculation lately" and added its "too early to tell which way this could go, but the two sides are talking."
That jibes with a report on Sept. 17 from The Athletic's Craig Custance, who noted that "one source on a potentially interested team said the price on Palmieri is high in part because the Devils are in no rush at this point. '[The Devils] got a lot for [Blake] Coleman and [Taylor] Hall,' said the executive. 'I don't think this market is reflective of deadline pricing because you're only getting one playoff run [out of Palmieri].'"
So there is buzz building around the 29-year-old right winger, who posted 25 goals and 20 assists this past season in 65 games, his fifth straight season with at least 24 goals. If he and the Devils can't find common ground on an extension, expect him to be moved.
Don't be surprised if the Arizona Coyotes shake things up this offseason. Custance reported that "there are executives outside Arizona who believe the Coyotes are open to moving just about any player over 25 years old, which makes the Coyotes roster an interesting place to look to improve your team."
That means players such as Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Darcy Kuemper—along with Hall's negotiating rights—could be on the trade block, per Custance. Seravalli reported on Sept. 24 that "Phil Kessel, Ekman-Larsson, Derek Stepan, Michael Grabner and Niklas Hjalmarsson are Trade Bait candidates as the Yotes look to shave salary."
The Coyotes might look like a much different team in the 2020-21 season.
